Last year I turned to this site to offer an apology to the brash comedian and now I’m here promoting his new TV series “Louie“, which premiered last night on FX. Since no one from FX‘s marketing department were nice enough to send me screeners, I caught the show last night and the critics were right – its fantastic.

“Louie” is part real-life, part nouveau sitcom – allowing Louis CK to ‘play’ a character, who happens to be a recently divorced comedian named Louie. The show doesn’t veer too far from CK’s real life, including his awkward return to dating and his bizarre attempts to make his daughters ‘like’ him and much of the plot comes from his stand-up routine. Think an HBO version of “Seinfeld” but circa 1995, with the stand-up material acting as a bridge to the plot not an introduction. And you can’t forget that this show is about an actual NYC comedian because within the first two episodes, which premiered back to back last night, there have already been cameos from half of the NYC comedian population. Its an evolved version of the stand-up to sitcom premise we are all so familiar with, both in its tone and its settings. The show carefully straddles the line of real-life for Louis CK and has moved beyond the studio settings so popular for sitcoms and uses New York City as its actual backdrop. This show breaks ground as it doesn’t stick to the standard parameters of a TV show, much like a handful of HBO & Showtime programming has, so much at times I actually forgot I was watching a sitcom.

This is not the first TV project for Louis CK – his overtly realistic sitcom “Lucky Louie” ran on HBO for a season back in 2006 before getting canceled due to low ratings. And “Louie” seems like an obvious evolution from “Lucky Louie”, where the jokes allow us to laugh at the uncomfortable aspects of every day life, especially as an adult. CK’s standard themes – aging, curiosity over sexuality, fatherhood and dieting – are still weaved throughout the show, but now we can actually laugh with the comedian as opposed to just feel plain old bad for him. Much like CK’s material, “Louie” sometimes loses its main focus and there were a few very “STELLA” moments, like when his date just left in a helicopter, where the show goes almost too ‘next level’. If you are familiar with CK’s brand of comedy or if you appreciate a comedy that is far from cookie cutter, then you will find this the show more than refreshing. FX continues to bring a new style of comedy to the small screen, like its hit “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”, a program where the main characters are so dysfunctional that you have to laugh at them. Check out a promo for “Louie” below and if you enjoy awkward comedies, in the vein of “Curb Your Enthusiasm” and “IASIF”, make sure to tune in every Tuesday at 11PM on FX.
And while Im sure that’s somewhat true, thanks to the internet, DVR and Netflix it’s not too late to get into “Party Down“. The critically acclaimed sitcom, which focuses officially wraps its second season tonight at 10PM.

Tonight marks the triumphant return of Jane Lynch to the show, which has held up nicely this season despite her lame but likely profitable choice to leave Party Down for Glee. In the episode, Jane Lynch hires her former colleagues to cater her wedding, and much like every other episode of the show, hijinks ensue. Adam Scott, Ken Marino, Lizzy Caplan, Martin Starr, Ryan Hansen and Megan Mullally make up the insanely dysfunctional crew, who would prefer to be making it in Hollywood than serving in it. And with guest appearances from Steve Guttenberg, Kristen Bell, Patrick Duffy and Paul Scheer, to name a few, this show should be appointment TV. Season 3 isn’t a definite yet, as ratings are tricky on Starz and most of the cast are too busy actually scoring major gigs, but Im keeping my fingers crossed. As a handful of entertainment sites, like Movieline, are speculating that tonight’s episode could be Party Down’s last and providing pretty good reasoning, like losing a handful of the cast due to their major gigs, it would be incredibly sad to see another gem of a TV show leave the airwaves way too soon.

Check out the trailer for Season 2 and see what you have been missing. And don’t forget to tune in tonight at 10PM.
TBS, in an attempt to prove to us that they are in fact “Very Funny”, has officially added Conan O’Brien to its roster. The comedian will once again join the late night fold with a nightly hour-long program, set to air at 11PM, beginning this November. Currently, George Lopez has the time slot on basic cable network, but will be moved to midnight once the O’Brien show premieres. Like Lopez’s program, O’Briens will run from Monday – Thursday night, to avoid lackluster ratings on the graveyard that is known as Friday night television. Lopez has said, “”It’s the beginning of a new era in late-night comedy” and is exciting to follow O’Brien come the Fall.

O’Brien was in talks to join Fox as their late night host, but the deal fell through when the network couldn’t confirm that the program would air on each of its stations, and at the same time slot. So after much battling, O’Brien has found himself a home and hopefully, will find himself the ratings to support the “movement”. Until then you can find him and crew on Twitter, where he made the announcement today and at a theater near you for his national tour “Legally Prohibited from Being Funny on Television”, which kicks off tonight in Oregon.

Not sure where the program will go, as his character is a simpleton doctor who provides nonsensical, yet hysterical health tips on a local news program, but either way Im stoked. The show will premiere on August 23rd, so we have a while, but until then lets mull around the possibilities of what we can expect from a weekly appointment with Dr. Steve Brule. For your health, I recommend you check out the first of what I can assume will be many promo videos.
The man who is synonymous with film criticism in America has become a hero to many recently thanks to his insightful film critiques, helpfulness with fellow journalists, prolific Twitter account and his Esquire profile. The magazine published a brilliant and artfully detailed profile of the man, including his battle with cancer that left him missing half his jaw and without a voice. A voice that any film buff or pop culture vulture can still remember explaining the beauty behind the man films he saw and cherished and attacking and criticizing the ones he hated. So its amazing to see that he has it back, sort of. In the video below, via Videogum, we see what technology can really do. With state of the art computer programming and thousands of hours of old footage/recordings of Ebert, they were able to create a system where in Roger can type in what he wants to say and the words will actually be formulated with his OWN voice. Prepare the box of tissues and remember there really are reasons to not be cynical.

Inspiring is a word I do not use lightly, but Ebert and his family are truly inspiring. As a self-proclaimed chatterbox and a person who has dealt with throat issues, my biggest fear is to have to remain quite and not let my voice be heard. Voicing opinions is a critics work and I can’t imagine the weight of losing that ability, so its amazing to watch Ebert regain some of his old self back. What a champion to have a smile throughout this ordeal. Don’t forget to check out the full interview today.

Unless you have been living under a pop culture avoiding rock, you might have heard about the movement to get Betty White to host “Saturday Night Live“. Gaining more momentum every day, a Facebook Group whose main mission is to get her to host sketch program has secured 225,000 fans in less than two weeks and is pulling in stronger numbers each day. While many could say, who cares what a Facebook group thinks, I would love to provide a detailed list as to why Betty White she not only host the program, but should be the host for the season finale. An undeniable comedic talent, White has exactly what it takes to host the show and possibly score NBC some stellar ratings while doing so.

Plain and simple – Betty White is hilarious.

She has been involved in television since before the world knew who Lucille Ball was and has production and writing credits under her belt, as well as experience on radio and live programming, giving her that improv edge so necessary to succeed at SNL. She was an award winning cast member of some of the most beloved American sitcoms of all time, like “The Golden Girls” and “The Mary Tyler Moore Show“, and has a new show coming out on TVLand, which will probably bring the channel its largest ratings to date.

She ain’t afraid to play dirty. With her appearances on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson where she called Sarah Palin a crazy bitch or when she pretended to be a drug dealer, White has no fear about going too far. She has also provided a much needed laugh at the usually stale Comedy Central Roasts, and her chat with Chelsea Handler when she was promoting The Proposal last year is hysterical.

Speaking of The Proposal, Betty White brought the funny backstage as well, with her various behind the scenes antics, which were caught on video by FunnyorDie.com. Not only did she score a number one movie at the box office, but she she scored a number one with the young generation of comedy lovers with this.

White is no schlub when it comes to gimmicks and will go above and beyond to rock a joke. Her turn in a Snickers ad that aired during the SuperBowl shows that the actress has no issue with getting physical.

Betty has been recognized with nearly every entertainment mile marker, including Emmys and most recently a Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award. The next obvious step is a gig hosting SNL.

RATINGS. While SNL has been picking up steam recently, it still needs a massive boost to its ratings. I think picking a host who is not under the age of 50, female and a classic comedienne might the perfect way. I have a feeling my grandmother would stay up just a little later on her Saturday night if she thought Rose Nylund would be hosting SNL. And think of all the amazing skits, beyond the recalls to her many quality sitcoms. And guest stars – its a no brainer.

And finally, because Lorne Michaels has allowed Ashton Kutcher and Justin Timberlake to host the show like a bazillion times, but never Betty? Jesus, if January Jones can do it, a moldy pencil can, so lets give Betty a try. Come on, what would you do to see Betty White in a Digital Short raping or dancing with Andy Sandberg?

So, lets all collective do what we have to do and get the vote out. Or just contact the powers that be at NBC and SNL and tell them we will forgive the networks asshattery on the Conan O’Brien debacle if they do this one thing. Oh this and canceling “Heroes”. Is this too much to ask?

Well congrats is definitely in order for the young stars of MTV’s “Jersey Shore”. They held out for raises, which they so rightfully deserved, and are coming back for a second season of the bizarre pop culture hit. MTV announced this weekend that indeed the cast members will once again be fist pumpin’ and apparently getting $10K an episode to do it. Though the fist pumpin’ and parting will most likely not be going down in Seaside Heights. What I can only assume has become both a logistic and legal nightmare for MTV and their production crew will now force the network to look for a new home for Snooki and her “Wahs”. Rumored locations that the producers have been scouting are the Hamptons, Delaware and Rhode Island, and I m sure once they decide the location will be secret for less than 24 hours. And while the main 6 cast members are definitely returning, MTV has yet to confirm the return of Angelina, who I can only assume quickly realized her rash decision to leave the house that pink built was the wrong way to go.

So to avoid any fading in the stars they accidentally created, MTV has sent Snooki, The Situation and Pauly D to almost any public function, keeping their names and faces in the press and in the minds of millions. And I can only assume we can expect dozens of silly viral concoctions and celebrations of all things “Jersey Shore“, like the below video. Check out the “real” Situation and whats is really behind the lovable fist pumpers.

If this video is any indication, I think Snooki and Mike have very good prospects as comedic actors and could easily be pulling one on us. But I will continue to believe in the sincerity of the lovable guidos and guidettes we have all been smitten with since the premiere. What do you think the kids should do next? Present at the Oscars? Stop by Saturday Night Live? Take over for Jay Leno? Really, the skys the limit, well until the 15 minutes is truly up.

Sadly, tonight marked Conan O’Brien’s last night behind the desk of “The Tonight Show” and I’m not going to lie, I got teary eyed. After all the nonsense and all the snark going around the past couple of weeks regarding NBC’s Late Night Wars 2.0, there is something to be said about the goodbye O’Brien gave to his fans tonight. As a fan of Conans for years, it was incredibly touching to see how important the show, his staff and his fans are to him. To watch someone have to say goodbye to something that they had worked hard for years for and seemed to love every moment of was painful. Quite honestly, I will not be able to say it as eloquent as O’Brien said it himself, so here he is thanking everyone, including NBC, for their time and support over the years.

Conan was feted by some of the biggest stars in the business, who came to support the man and say thanks to what he did. O’Brien in between big name guests like Tom Hanks, who created the Coco moniker, Steve Carrell and Neil Young, wanted to make sure that his fans, especially the youth who created this movement in support of him, knew that thinking big and being positive would not let you down in the end. O’Brien said, “To all the people watching, I can never thank you enough for your kindness to me and I’ll think about it for the rest of my life. All I ask of you is one thing: please don’t be cynical. I hate cynicism- it’s my least favorite quality and it doesn’t lead anywhere.”

He rounded out his last night as host with a rocking version of “Free Bird” performed by Will Ferrell, his wife Dawn, Beck, Billy Gibbons, Ben Harper and his band. O’Brien joined in on the fun, grabbed a guitar, which presumably was from his massive personal collection, and wailed away. Oddly enough, this song became one of my favorites courtesy of the soundtrack for a little movie Tom Hanks was in himself. You might have heard of it, Forrest Gump? Check out O’Brien and his band of merry rocker.

For me, the program was emotional on various levels. O’Brien was the first last night talk show host I grew up with. By the time I was old enough to get it, Leno had already taken the throne from Johnny Carson after his first vicious battle for the spot with Dave Letterman. And Letterman, while funny, was too old for me to get. O’Brien was quirky, awkward, smart and more than anything into “my” pop culture. He opened my eyes to a different level of humor, alongside “The State” and “Kids in the Hall”. He was the antithesis of standard late night programming. And something that has yet to be noted in the nearly thousand pieces that have pontificated over this late night debacle is the amount of exposure his program brought to not yet big names in music and comedy. When Neil Young ended his beautiful performance tonight, and we found out he was more of a Conan supporter than to be expected, he thanked O’Brien for what he has done for “new music”. And it’s true, what Johnny Carson was to comedians in the lates 70′s and 1980′s, Conan was to indie rock bands in the 90′s and early ’00s. He was the only place I would ever see some of my favorite bands get any coverage outside of MTV and knowing what occurred behind the scenes, he had his hand in picking out the majority of the musical quests. He got “us”. We weren’t just an audience to him, we were his people and he ours. Micheal Ian Black explained it best why this whole mess has seemed to really effect my generation. If someone like O’Brien can get screwed by a big corporation, what’s to keep us safe? It was almost a slap in the face to anyone who doesn’t like the average comedian, the anti-Dane Cook in us all. For all us kids, who grew up on bizarre tripped out cartoons, after school specials and found humor in Ween songs, its a real dose of reality that in fact we can not have it all. So from the bottom of my heart and from one pale, red-headed Irish kid to the next, I want to thank you Conan O’Brien. I want to thank you for entertaining us for years, opening my eyes to comedy and music I had no idea existed, backing your staff in your original move to LA and in your contract negotiations and for most importantly, keeping it classy. I know you are going to go on a much deserved and well, legally mandated vacation, but I want to let you know you have a supporter in me for life and I will be waiting with a cowbell for September 1st to come, if only for the better weather. You go Coco. You go.
