Just watching this video made me a bit sad. It seems that the glory days of Lindsay Lohan are long gone and every year we will have to watch her have paranoid freak outs in the public eye. Just watching this video made me a bit sad. It seems that the glory days of Lindsay Lohan are long gone and every year we will have to watch her have paranoid freak outs in the public eye. Originally, it was just standard celebrity scandals, with her crashing stolen cars, falling asleep while her secret girlfriend drove her car home after a night at the club, snorting drugs in the bathroom of another club and a few stays in rehab. But, since the integration of social media in Lohan’s personal life, we have learned far too much about the one time child star. Silly Lilo joined Facebook and somehow thought access to all her personal information, including AIM name and cell phone, which prompted hackers to recover a few voicemails and compile them into a nice little embeddable video, so you can hear what happens in this chick’s daily life. You know the normal rehab pals calling to reunite, a dad who never seems to stop promoting, even when just leaving his daughter a message and countless crazies who just want to “go out with” Lindsay. You have to feel bad for this chick that over and over and over again her privacy gets violated, but then she takes to Twitter to call out her suspected girlfriend of some sort of betrayal and now that’s headline news. As I have said countless times, someone needs a spotlight time out in the worst way possible. If your shopping trips look this, its time to invest in some real me time and take a vacation from it all. Please for your sake and ours.

The band’s complete re-mastered catalog, a celebratory boxed set, as well as The Beatles: Rock Band, are celebrating their releases today and everyone has gotten into the spirit of things, or more accurately Beatles Mania 2.0. Entertainment Weekly put together a comprehensive list of the band’s 50 greatest songs, and while Something only reached the number five slot, it will forever be my favorite song from The Beatles. As Frank Sinatra once said, it is “the greatest love song ever written,” and I couldn’t agree more. “Something” is the first George Harrison penned song that found its way to the A side of a Beatles album, was his only American charts topper and has been covered by over 150 artists since its release in 1969.

I fell in love with the song the moment I heard it. It didn’t hurt that it an essential part of what I still believe is one of the most romantic and adorable scenes in all of cinematic history. What I would have given to have Jake Ryan pick me up outside a church. This Thompson Twins song has been on most of my mixes over the years and will forever remain one of my favorite songs.

“If You Were Here” – by The Thompson Twins (From “16 Candles”)

This song might not be the stand out hit from the movie, but I love it all the same. I had to buy the “Pretty in Pink” soundtrack on tape a few times because I would just wear it out. The Smiths, Psychadelic Furs and this gem, just to name a few. What a perfect emo soundtrack to match the teen angst of the film.

“Wouldn’t Be Good” – by Nik Kershaw (From “Pretty in Pink“)

I could go on and on about loving this song, but who doesn’t love this song. Who doesn’t think of the five kids from opposite cliques finding themselves within a library during a Saturday detention center whenever you hear this. Its an anthem for teenage angst because of this movie. I can’t forget about this song since it was one of the only songs on the score heavy soundtrack.

“Don’t You Forget About Me” by Simple Minds (From “The Breakfast Club”)

It wasn’t an 80′s movie if you didn’t have an Oingo Boingo song on your soundtrack. John Hughes used a few of their songs in supporting roles, like “Wild Sex” in the dance scene of “16 Candles”. I can not think of another soundtrack song for a movie that so perfectly encapsulates the film like “Weird Science”. I defy you to think of the movie without this song popping into your head.

Unfortunately, I could not find a video of the most perfect chase sequence filmed for the big screen, but we can listen to the English Beat’s “March of the Swivel Heads” and remember Ferris jumping on trampolines, running through neighbors homes and finally making it back to the safety of his bed before Mr. Rooney could harm him.

Flesh for Lulu is another band that found some support from Hughes, as he put them in a few of his later teen/family movies. I love love love this song.

“I Go Crazy” – by Flesh for Lulu (From “Some Kind of Wonderful”)

And no mix/compilation of musical moments from Hughes’ films could be complete without Duckie’s dance to Otis Redding’s Tenderness. After seeing this scene, I was ruined for boys forever. In fact, during my teenage years, my friends and I would only date boys who we believed would be just as prone to showing their affections as he was. This scene also helped open my eyes to the genius of Redding and this song has found its way on most love comps I have made.

The [...]]]> It’s finally here. In 2007, Heath Ledger approached Modest Mouse about directing a video for their song “King Rat”. Ledger put together the concept for the animated video, which was to highlight illegal whale hunts along the coast of Australia, and was working on the project up until his untimely death last year. The highly anticipated video was released today, along with Modest Mouse’s latest EP on Epic “No One’s First, And You’re Next”. Within the video, Ledger wanted to bring awareness to the anarchic cruelty occurring without preaching about the illegal whaling practice. And to further the mission, iTunes will be donating proceeds from the sales of the video to the non-profit Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, whose mission is to end the destruction of marine habitats, ecosystems and wildlife and promote conservations within the world’s oceans. Modest Mouse has added a post-script to the video which reads, “This began with our friend, a great defender of life, and was completed in his spirit.”

The video was co-directed and illustrated by Daniel Auber, animated by Norris Houk and Jade Taglioli and produced by Sara Cline, from The Masses, the production company Ledger was a partner in.
