Seriously, Hollywood why are you trying to remake all of Goldie Hawn’s classic movies? Last week, it was announced that J.Lo will <del datetime="2010-03-31T15:42:41+00:00">stink up</del> star in an updated version of the 1980′s classic Overboard. And now it seems that wasn’t enough, as today it was announced that NewLine/Warner Bros. are set to remake of Private Benjamin, with Anna Faris to star. Yes, the assault on my lovely childhood continues, but at least this time the casting is perfect. While normally I would threaten an all out attack on Hollywood for the audacity to even attempt to remake such a classic, my love of all things Faris is calming my anger and peaking my interest in a remake.
The original starred Goldie Hawn, for which she received an Best Actress Oscar nomination, as a naive and spoiled woman who enlists in the Army after her husband’s sudden death on the wedding night. It’s a classic fish out of water story, but with a feminist update, with Hawn prevailing at the end. The film skyrocketed Hawn into A-List territory and made waves for the women’s movement. It also scored two other Oscar nods, one for supporting actress Eileen Brennan (who will be nearly impossible to replace) and original screenplay.

Amy Talkington, who also penned the updated version of my favorite movie,Valley Girl is writing the screenplay and Mark Gordon producing. The latest version will definitely discuss the recent wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and acknowledge the importance of women within our military, but not poke fun at the men and women serving.

As I’ve said before, I’m not crazy about remakes, especially when I know there are still oodles of stories to be told. But if this is the vehicle Faris needs to make to put her into the spotlight, then I am behind it. Faris is a rare comedienne, one who is more expressive with facial gestures than anything that could ever be uttered out of her mouth. And while she has had some starring roles, like The House Bunny, nothing has come out and propelled her to the next level, which she so deserves to be. And this disservice is part of the real issue within Hollywood nowadays. Why is someone as talented as Faris not working 4 -5 times a year and turning down quality screenplays left and right? Why is Hollywood not creating star vehicles for such a talent? Where’s her Apatow? Personally, I have a screenplay I have been working on for Faris, so if by the off chance anyone even remotely affiliated with her reads this – CALL ME!(No really, call me!) But, seriously Anna Faris should be a household name, on the covers and in the theaters. Why is it taking Hollywood so long to get this? Hopefully, this does the trick.

Oh lordy. When will this remake madness, i.e. we’ve run out of ideas, Hollywood is going through end? The latest remake/revisit/murdering is a return to the classic sitcom “Laverne & Shirley“, by Gary Marshall and JAMIE FOXX??? Yep, your eyes are not deceiving you. Marshall, who created the sitcom back in the 1970′s, will join forces with Jamie Foxx, who in his own right once was known as a comedian, to rework the classic chick-buddy comedy with none other than Jennifer Garner and Jessica Biel. The two discussed their wanting to revisit “Laverne & Shirley” when they were non-stop promoting Marshall’s Valentine’s Day and what Garner wants, she gets.

Foxx, who will pen the screenplay, has said that he wants to retool the idea so its more in the now, and of course, urban. I mean doesn’t a Garner and Biel tag team comedy film just scream URBAN? Anyways, instead of Laverne wearing her trademark L on her sweaters, she’ll have street tough tattoo of the initial, will most likely played by Garner. SAY WHAT? Personally, Biel makes a bit more sense in the tough and tattooed girl role, but who am I? No word if Penny Marshall, Gary’s sister, who played Laverne, and Cindy Williams, better known as Shirley, will help out and make a cameo or appearance in the film. Which brings me to a more important casting question: Who will play Squiggy?

Now, I don’t want to hate on the project too much, mainly cause Gary Marshall once produced great female-centric films. And I desperately miss the days of powerful female comedy teams, like Shelly Long & Bette Midler, Lily Tomlin & Bette Midler or seriously anything in the 80′s with Bette Midler (except for Beaches), so anything that even resembles these classics is OK in my eyes. But Im just not sure I need Jamie Foxx, of all people, penning the screenplay. And while I like both Garner and Biel, I can’t help but think this sort of project just screams Amy Poehler.

Anyways, what do you think? Will Foxx do a good job? Are there a better tag team than Garner and Biel for this? Let me know in the comments below.

UPDATE: Apparently, this is no way a done deal and Foxx’s publicist has already said there is “no truth” to this. But, I’ve heard that before. The revisiting of the sitcom is still happening though, for now, so keep the comments coming on who you think should be the stars!

Ugh! Why is Hollywood continuously trying to kill my childhood? One of the most perfect comedies, Overboard, which is like crack when you tune into on a Saturday afternoon, is in the works to be remade!!! And with Jennifer Lopez in the starring role!

In the original, Goldie Hawn flawlessly plays socialite Joanna Stayton, who falls overboard from her yacht outside a Podunk town, develops amnesia and is left at a hillbilly hospital by her husband Grant. Dean Proctor (Kurt Russell) a local contractor originally hired to revamp Stayton’s closet on the yacht and who is not compensated for his work, sees Joanna on the TV and decides to seek revenge on the rich chick and convince her she is wife and mother of his four unruly kids. Hilarity ensues, everyone learns a lesson, Dean builds a mini-golf course and an adorable kid goes “Bah bah bah bah”.

Its quite near perfect, but Jenny from the Block and Will Smith think they should go twinkering around with classic comedies, so here we are. And no worries, Smith won’t be building any closets (ha ha) in the flick since he will be producing the film with his partner at Overbrook, James Lassiter. Adam Cooper, Bill Collage and Leslie Dixon wrote the current script, but no word yet if it sticks close to the original. Not sure how you will pull this kind of thing off with all of today’s technology and Im hoping this has nothing to do with the Bronx, but you never know. Check out the original trailer below and avoid this remake with every being in your body.

So it makes me VERY STOKED to hear that Tim Burton will be revisiting the timeless fairy tale. Ain’t It Cool News reported yesterday that the director will be adapting Sleeping Beauty, but this time from the point of view of the evil villain Maleficent. The story is right up Burton’s alley with his constant creative pursuit of the misguided and alienated weirdos. But I do have one issue…. Maleficent is my favorite villain of all time, so her casting has to be just right! So please Tim, do not cast your lovely and talented wife Helena Bonham-Carter in this. It would be the easy way out and I think this sort of casting really needs a much more graceful and classically beautiful woman. Someone like Idina Menzel, who has loads of experience playing the crafty villain, or possibly Anne Hathaway, who could use an evil turn for her career. Whomever gets the honor to play Maleficent needs a presence, and yet a vulnerability so we, the audience, can care why and how she ended up so damaged. So until everything is confirmed, casting is set and we have a production date, I’ll keep my fingers crossed that this will come out as good as I think it can with Burton at the helm. Check out video from the original Disney classic, which has been released from the Disney vault once again.

There are few things as classic as the National Lampoon’s Vacation flicks. Well other than that hot mess that took place in Las Vegas, of course. But really I am not sure if there is anything that quite captured the hilarity that comes along with dragging teenagers along for a vacation or the despair that comes with family visits during the holidays than these films. So it’s great news that New Line will be developing a “sequel” to the perfect family road trip film “Vacation”. Its a “sequel” because the concept, which has already been developed, will focus on Rusty Griswold. Originally portrayed by Anthony Michael Hall, Rusty will take over the duties of patriarch from his father Clark Griswold, played perfectly by Chevy Chase, and take his own family on their cross country road trip. While the script is not yet penned yet, nor any of the cast confirmed, there is definite hope that the originals, at least Chevy Chase and Beverly D’Angelo, return for the ride. And word is that New Line is looking to make this a film more along the lines of “Planes, Trains & Automobiles” as opposed to recent family road trip fare like, “Are We There Yet?” – which is good news for fans of the original. So glad they decided to ditch the terrible direction the National Lampoon movies were falling into and going for the gold this time. New Line has signed David Dobkin, director of “Wedding Crashers”, to produce and possibly direct this version.

Is it just me or does this not sound like the most perfect vehicle for Will Arnett and Amy Poehler to team up again? I could SOOO see Arnett as the aggressive Griswold, who is obsessed with his kids having fun and it would be interesting to see a road trip comedy with the aid of modern technology, like GPS, cell phones and credit cards. Whose with me in starting a letter campaign to New Line to explore the Arnett & Poehler possibility?

As a child, there were few movies I loved more than “Footloose”. In fact, I made my mother bring me to see it multiple times in the theater just so I could dance in the aisles and its soundtrack will be one of my favorite albums ever. And as I grew up and could actually understand the plot line, I appreciated the movie even more. It went above and beyond the typical teen rebellion flicks from the 1980′s and hit upon an issue which could hit home for so many people out there. So it pains me to know Hollywood will be remaking another one of my favorite flicks. Originally, Zac Efron, my tween crush, was supposed to take the reins from Kevin Bacon and play the bad boy rebel Ren McCormack who brings mayhem to his new quiet and holier than thou town. Sadly, Efron pulled out to avoid his being typecast as the musical actor and they had to begin the search once again. I personally liked their next choice to lead the movie, but this got the kibosh too.

Unfortunately, the execs seemed to
think Chase Crawford could fill Bacon’s shoes on this, giving him the lead role. Efron I could see in this role because he has a certain charm to him and he can dance, but Crawford is just a wet blanket and has zero personality. And since the director Kenny Ortega, who directed the “High School Musical” franchise, has turned this remake into a full blown musical, Crawford better have an amazing voice to carry his character. This will most likely be a disaster with him in the lead role, but as long they cast the part of Ariel a bit better, it might not be “Justin and Kelly” bad. Miley Cyrus, Julianne Hough and Hayden Panettierre are all in talks to fill in Lori Singer’s role as Ariel Moore, the daughter of the bible thumping preacher who removes dancing, singing and music from the small town. I think Hough is quite a natural fit there, since she is a supreme dancer and a wonderful singer, but I am afraid if she is cast this will turn into a countrified version of the original, with Rascal Flats covering classic Kenny Loggins songs, like “I’m Free”, which will make me very angry. And while the theme of the movie, teenage rebellion, religious overlords and dance fever is actually pretty timely to America, I still don’t want anyone messing with this soundtrack. So let’s watch the video now and hope the execs over at Paramount Pictures really don’t screw this one up to much.
On the heels of major success for both “Hairspray” and “Mamma Mia!”, New Line Cinema has announced that they will be producing another film version of the classic musical “Damn Yankees”. Jim Carrey and Jake Gyllenhaal have signed on to star in the remake and has both actors performing in their first big screen musical. Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, the producers of “Hairspray”, will be behind the scenes once again for New Line.

This will be the second time “Yankees” will receive the big screen treatment. “Damn Yankees” originally debuted on Broadway in 1955 was choreographed by the wonderful Bob Fosse and received seven Tony Awards. It was made into a film in 1958, and starring Ray Walston, Tab Hunter and Gwen Verdon (Fosse’s muse at one point.) This adaptation of the play is expected to be a modernization of the original, which was set in the 1950’s. Gyllenhaal will be playing the role of Joe Boyd, a fanatic baseball team fan who makes a deal with the devil so his team can get it together and go to the World Series. The devil, naturally, will be played by Carrey. No word yet who will step into the role of Lola, the lost soul used by the devil to make sure Boyd signs over his soul.

Nothing really is sacred in Hollywood anymore. Yesterday it was announced that Universal as part of their partnership with Hasbro will remake the classic film “Clue”.

Every gosh darn day there is something from my childhood being taken from me and remade and I am not sure if I can take this anymore. Earlier this month, we told you about Universal’s optioning of “Candy Land” into a future full length movie, which I didn’t have a problem with. In fact, I am pretty intrigued on what they will do with this. But “Clue” is perfect just the way it is. It’s a perfect 80’s caper-style comedy and it showcases the rare gem that Madeline Kahn was.

The remake will be directed and produced by Gore Verbinski, the man behind “Pirates of the Caribbean”. It will be fourth board game from Hasbro that Universal will be adapting to big screen versions. The basic plot of the movie/game is the viewers/players take on the task of figuring who done in it in a twist filled murder mystery. Word is that this version will be darker than the original, which had a sort of Mel Brooks feel to it. While the original might not have been a box office smash, it had a second life with its omnipresence on cable movie channels and now on DVD. I could see people like Parker Posey and David Cross involved in this version, a virtual who’s who of the snarky comedic scene. Unfortunately, if they decide to go with a more thriller version of the game, this might end up being some sad horror movie.

In other crazy remake news, Warner Brothers and Leonardo DiCaprio’s production company is interested in remaking the 80’s children’s classic The NeverEnding Story”. It will be a “modernization” of the classic fantasy flick and will not deviate to great from the original. No writers are attached at this time. And if that wasn’t bad enough, there are plans to remake “Robo-Cop” and one of my favorite movies of all time “Total Recall”. It won’t take much to make my brain turn to mush if they screw that one up. But I do wonder if Governor Schwarzenegger would make an appearance in the new version? That might be interesting enough not to protest it.
