Last week, MTV confirmed what we knew was inveitable after last season’s lackluster ratings for their one-time money machine, “The Hills” – it has been canceled. While I have gone from pure obsession to pure loathing of almost all things ‘The Hills’, I am glad that this soap meets reality program can hopefully die with some dignity. The new, and apparently final, season premieres April 27th, and will follow the tabloid fodder that the chicks are experts at riling up. From Heidi Montag’s radical plastic surgery earlier this year to Kristin Cavallari’s alleged drug addiction and everything inconsequential in between, we will hopefully figure out why we tuned into this farce of reality to begin with. Check out the trailer for the upcoming season.

The Hills – MTV Shows

Now, I know I have gone on the record here before pledging my love for this show and its theatrics, I still hate the lack of reality in its content. For some reason, the producers have made it their business to actually prevent the viewers at home to watch what these folks are really up to, and just keep on showing staged lunches, club nights and crying fits. So, it seems from the trailer, we might actually get to see what has REALLY been going on while the only cameras catching the action were those of the paparazzi. But by now, can the cast even discern whats real and whats for TV? I guess we’ll have to see and find out.

Well congrats is definitely in order for the young stars of MTV’s “Jersey Shore”. They held out for raises, which they so rightfully deserved, and are coming back for a second season of the bizarre pop culture hit. MTV announced this weekend that indeed the cast members will once again be fist pumpin’ and apparently getting $10K an episode to do it. Though the fist pumpin’ and parting will most likely not be going down in Seaside Heights. What I can only assume has become both a logistic and legal nightmare for MTV and their production crew will now force the network to look for a new home for Snooki and her “Wahs”. Rumored locations that the producers have been scouting are the Hamptons, Delaware and Rhode Island, and I m sure once they decide the location will be secret for less than 24 hours. And while the main 6 cast members are definitely returning, MTV has yet to confirm the return of Angelina, who I can only assume quickly realized her rash decision to leave the house that pink built was the wrong way to go.

So to avoid any fading in the stars they accidentally created, MTV has sent Snooki, The Situation and Pauly D to almost any public function, keeping their names and faces in the press and in the minds of millions. And I can only assume we can expect dozens of silly viral concoctions and celebrations of all things “Jersey Shore“, like the below video. Check out the “real” Situation and whats is really behind the lovable fist pumpers.

If this video is any indication, I think Snooki and Mike have very good prospects as comedic actors and could easily be pulling one on us. But I will continue to believe in the sincerity of the lovable guidos and guidettes we have all been smitten with since the premiere. What do you think the kids should do next? Present at the Oscars? Stop by Saturday Night Live? Take over for Jay Leno? Really, the skys the limit, well until the 15 minutes is truly up.

On the heels of its inaugural season on Lifetime, “Project Runway” has returned and hopefully with its old formula. Last season was plagued with dated material, inconsistent judging and while I adore the place, LA ain’t fashion. Tonight’s season premiere, which makes it the seventh season for the fashion reality juggernaut, finds us back in the Big Apple and from the trailer, with a real talented group of designers. With Michael Kors and Nina Garcia resuming their roles as judges on a weekly basis, as well as the fact the show was taped recently and not held back a year, “Project Runway” should finally return to the reality beast it is. In keeping with old time tradition, I will be recapping the program for you every Friday morning so you will know who is in or out. Let’s pull out our scissors and measuring tape and join Heidi and Tim Gunn as they search for the next great designer.

Bravo jumped on the soon to be TV icon and turned the cameras on her company, as well as her private life as a single mother living and raising her daughter in New York City. While you might not want to work for her, its incredibly refreshing to see a no nonsense woman given respect in her field, working for what she has and wanting to help those around her find their most successful selves. I can not wait to see all the behind the scenes mayhem of NYC fashion week, photo shoots and what the “real” employees of People’s Revolution think about their jobs and boss.

So let me take a moment to thank the good people over at Bravo for allowing me to spend an hour a week with my most favorite fashion insider and ultra NYC tough chick. The show premieres on February 1st at 10PM, but you can get a sneak peek right now.

Wanna lose your lunch? Well have I got the perfect story to help. Last year, The Spielster looked at the surprisingly high salaries of the cast of “The Hills” and boy was it a shock. Gawker had released the specifics coincidentally the a week after Viacom, MTV’s parent company, had laid off nearly 800 employees. So when I learned that that Lauren Conrad was pulling in around $65K per episode for attempting conversation with ceiling eyes Audrina and pretending to go to college, I was a bit pissed. But those numbers were apparently nothing compared to the current pay days the cast is receiving. According to The Daily Beast, Lauren Conrad received $125K per episode during her last season, which I believe she spoke all about 50 words. Conrad’s contract also included a clause that no other co-star could earn as much as her. So while you are unemployed, LC was pulling in over a million bucks for a season of “The Hills”. The numbers continue to shock with Heidi Montag Pratt and Audrina Patridge are pulling in $100K an episode and newcomer or returnee, however you look at it, Kristin Cavallari is getting $90K an episode.

And while in some sick twisted way, I am still excited for the return of this show tonight on MTV, thanks to return of Cavallari, I can’t help but wonder if this money couldn’t go to, let’s say, some actual actors? I understand that this show is a gold mine for MTV. Besides the cast’s per episode numbers, overhead is quite low on a reality production. Sets are minimal, and actual businesses are killing themselves to get coverage on the show. Restaurants, clubs and businesses can increase their awareness with the general public by like 200% with just one five minute segment taking place on the show. Like Les Deux, a typical club in Hollywood that became a nationally known hot spot, and essentially a tourist trap. The Hills became MTV’s west coast version of “Sex and the City”, making places successful with just a mention. Record companies were clamoring to get their bands music, if lucky enough some actual face time, on the program. Companies like Teen Vogue, People’s Revolution, Bolthouse Productions and Epic Records all gave internships and jobs to cast members for screen time and additional coverage. And MTV actually created a spin off for Whitney and moved her to NYC so they could cash in on the industries here. When all is said and done, I can not believe that Lauren Conrad was pulling in millions for “being herself”. “The Hill’s” has essentially lost the idea that it is a reality show, since what is caught by the cameras is actually not their real life. They afford lavish homes, dinners out, trips and great cars, because of their MTV paychecks and sponsorship deals. Assistant gigs at styling agencies and record companies do not come with million dollar paychecks or centerfolds in <a href=http://www.playboy.com">Playboy and Maxim. And in a weird way, I feel that MTV, while certainly successful with this brand, could have really done something great by showing ACTUAL WORKING PEOPLE. I’m still tuning in tonight and most likely, so are you, if only just to see Spencer in a cowboy hat.

Is there no end to the funny that is Kathy Griffin? The queen of the D-List happily skewered Kate Gosselin, mother of eight, abuser of men and overall most hated woman in 2009, for her appearance on the Jimmy Kimmel show last night. She did this with the help of the brilliantly creepy George Takei and it was beautiful. Watch as the Lifetime Network has never looked so good.

Personally, I don’t hate Gosselin, but I am mad at the great deal of coverage she gets. I think she has made some bad choices, namely marrying a douchebag like Jon, but to keep a family of eight afloat nowadays, you have to get creative. I find it interesting that she has received the majority of the backlash from the public until Jon stepped out with some young coed. Every time I watched the show, which wasn’t often, she seemed intent in getting her kids to be disciplined and enjoying the most out of what reality fame could bring them. But that doesnt make the above clip any less funny. I can’t wait to see who Griffin takes on next.

Summers used to be spent drunk on the streets of NYC with friends stirring up trouble. Since I am now officially old, they are spent on my couch, in A/C, watching horrific reality TV. Sad, yes, but unfortunately true. Anyways, this reality TV induced coma I battle through can explain my recent appreciation for the torturous Big Brother. I didn’t want to recap this show, because this would admit to everyone out there that I actually care what happens to the house guests, but after last night’s episode, I can not keep quiet.

Last year, I made the mistake of watching this and actually liking a few of the house guests. For all those not living on planet USA, Big Brother, originally a British creation, is a program where they throw a bunch of lost souls, who want to win money, into a “house” on a sound stage in the bowels of Burbank or Studio City somewhere and watch them as they all go mad! What always starts out as an interesting sociological experiment, turns into a backstabbing greed fest, where NO ONE is to be trusted. And somehow, after last year’s debacle of watching good person be evicted over and over again, I returned to CBS to start my misery all over again. This season started out with house guests being in “cliques”, basically creating alliances from the very beginning and admitting that this show eventually spirals into high school style antics. There were a handful of standouts to me this season, those who deserve to move through the game due to their intelligence or overall honesty. See I know this is a game, but I hate to reward assholes with $250K so I always support the honest fools, which is why I end up pissed off when the season comes to a close.

For some reason on reality shows, I tend to like people who I would avoid like the plague in real life, which is why I became enraptured in the G-rated romance of Jeff & Jordan. In my opinion, the two most attractive house guests the show has ever had and they seemed to be genuinely interested in each other for more than the “game factor”. They cuddled, learned more about each other and seemed interested in playing an honest game, which makes them aces in my book. They joined forces with Michelle and Russell a few weeks ago, when Jeff won the “Coup D’etat” power from America, after Russell was the most hated person in the house, courtesy of Chima’s rants and the other alliance, made up of Natalie, Kevin, Lydia, Chima and once upon a time Jesse. But since Jeff used his America given power to shake up the game and kick out Jesse, the power has gone to his head, leading him to make mistake after mistake. Once Chima flipped and got kicked out of the house, Jeff & Jordan for some reason gunned after Lydia, as opposed to Kevin, the actual competitor left from that alliance. They then listened to lies from Kevin and Natalie and back doored Russell, essentially cementing an exit for either Jeff or Jordan. When Jeff exclaimed over and over again that Russell got got, I had to hold back from screaming, you dummy, you got got.

These ridiculous power plays, kicking out members of your alliance, not to mention one of the most disliked house guests, which essentially guarantees you a win against him, just shows how this game can get to a person. Watching Jeff high upon the power ladder a few weeks ago and now basically digging his own tunnel to the Jury House is painful. Mainly because I thought, for once, I would have picked a winner on this show and that people don’t always allow power to corrupt them on these time of programs. Either, I didn’t realize that Jeff was this stupid, to believe members of the competing alliance, that Jeff was never that honest to begin with since he had no issue back dooring Russell or the minute I like you, you will lose on a reality competition show. With Thursday’s vote, we will see one of the strongest players in Big Brother history get the ol’ heave ho because he messed up his own game. Which is why I will try my best never to get involved in such a silly show ever again. Oh who am I kidding, when does the next season start?

Are any of you watching this show? If you are, what do you think about this season so far?
