Maybe you heard something about this little old bill that got signed into law this Tuesday? You know the one that will reform health care on our nation and make it an affordable option for all of us bozos who don’t have the luxury of say, working for the government? Well our Vice President was so stoked about getting this bill signed that he slipped and said, audibly for cameras and microphones, to President Obama that this “is big f*@king deal”. And let’s be honest – IT IS! We have been waiting for nearly 100 years to get something like this through legislature so kudos to VP Biden for getting it right. But that didn’t stop the folks over at Late Night with Jimmy Fallon to mock the statement. And Im not hating on them for it, in fact Im obsessed with their revisiting the classic School House Rock cartoon. Check it out.

Wherever my political alliances lie, I have to say that the idea of a cable news network continuously providing only ONE side of the political story can not be deemed “fair and balanced”. With Palindemoneum taking over America, specifically in areas where they consider reporting first and knowledge second, it seems that whatever comes out of Sarah Palin’s mouth is thought of as gospel.
The other night Palin was a guest on (it pains me to write this) “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno”, where she not only charged that ALL media except for Fox News was providing editorials as opposed to factual news reporting, but was quoting the channel’s “Fair and Balanced” tag line as to her main reason to seek employment at the network. She also did stand-up, but that’s a whole other animal Im not getting into (until later today). This appearance seems to have sparked a reaction out of Jon Stewart, who in all honesty really needs no provoking when it comes to skewering Fox News employees. Stewart took some time to do reporting, collect facts and data and then come back at Palin and her assertation that Fox News is truly “fair and balanced”. And his aim was on Megyn Kelly, a recent darling of the network, who turned her Aryan features and appearances on “The O’Reilly Factor” into a daytime anchor gig. Recently, the bee in her bonnet has obviously been the Health care Debate and Kelly has repeatedly attacked that administration for continuing on with the bill. She charged that the majority of Americans are sick of (HAHA!) this bill battle and are against it. And to prove it, she managed to find four people over the age of 65, whom I can only assume receive health care and pensions from their previous jobs, as well as medicare, so the irony was apparently lost on both her and her research staff. And if there is one thing Jon can not handle, its messing with your numbers and proving your case. As Stewart learned from his “summit” with O’Reilly last month, opinions are for night time news editorial programs and day time is where the real new is provided on Fox News. Sadly, Kelly might not have learned this before discussing the Health Care Summit. Here’s Stewart confronting this “fair and balanced” coverage on “The Daily Show”.

I kid, I kid. If you are a fan of The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, you will know how the term eviscerates is misused on a daily basis by political leaning blogs. But Stewart did in fact stop by O’Reilly’s studio and discussed real politics, real tactics to fight terror and their beliefs, which lead to a pretty impressive discussion between the two talking heads.

Stewart, as always, was charming and while kept his responses sharp and witty, earnestly wanted to have a conversation with O’Reilly. And on Bill’s behalf, he did seem to entertain the idea of actually discussing ideas with Stewart as opposed to his usual scream tactics. Unfortunately, he didn’t seem to really take much ownership of things he has said and blamed a great deal of the anti-Obama sentiment on Fox News on his cohorts like Glenn Beck and Sean Hannity, which Stewart managed to call him on. Check out the unedited footage FoxNews was smart enough to put on their site.

When you see this many people come together, with such quick timing, to participate in an event like this it can make you smile in the face of tragedy. Tonight’s telethon for earthquake relief in Haiti was by all accounts a success, as it was able to entice Americans, and the world around, to donate time and money to the relief aid. And if there is one thing I know is that people are do not seem to have an abundance of time or money nowadays, so its always inspiring to see something pulling people together to assist in whatever little things we can do to bring some semblance of normalcy and health back to those battling in Haiti. Celebrities were on hand to field your donor calls and rouse interest into donating to this very worthy cause. And if that wasn’t enough, George Clooney and MTV had a stellar line up of musicians to drive you into donating to the funds via telephone or the web.

Personally, Justin Timberlake’s and Matt Morris’ version of Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah was haunting and beautiful and reminded me what Timberlake did best. You can view this performance here and purchase the track from iTunes tomorrow morning.

Other artists who showcased their talents for the greater good was Jennifer Hudson with a soulful version of “Let it Be”, Jay-Z, who teamed up with U2 and Rhianna, Sheryl Crow, Neil Young, Dave Matthews, Shakira and Coldplay, who managed to bring a bit of the rock to this cause. Again, you can check out the performances here and will be able to purchase the tracks tomorrow, as well as pre-order the DVD. And all proceeds go straight to relief work in Haiti. For more information on what you can do, check out Hope For Haiti Now.

A few months back, Lindsay Lohan began working with a friend on a documentary exposing the corrupt human trafficking practices taking place in India. Lohan joined a doc crew in India and began discussing the practice with families affected by it for BBC Three. A trailer for the upcoming documentary was released yesterday and I am not sure what to make of it yet. Yes, this might be for publicity. And yes, Lindsay Lohan might not be the best “serious” face for your very real and important documentary. But, if there is anyone who knows what its like to be sold by your parents into “slavery”, she certainly does.

I find it interesting and sort of really symbolic she is going to be doing this type of thing. And yes, I am being earnest.

Unfortunately, it was too late since Mr. Show, the brilliant sketch comedy program from David Cross and Bob Odenkirk, already mocked this topic years before this event was even a real thing. Apparently, its not hard to be a soothsayer nowadays. Only in God’s America my friends, only in God’s America.
Truer words could not have been spoken about or by Senator Ted Kennedy. Edward Kennedy, who was diagnosed with a brain tumor last May, passed away early this morning at the age of 77. He was known as “the lion of the Senate” and contributed more than 2500 pieces of legislation during his 40 years of public service to this nation. In the long tradition of the Kennedy’s, Teddy worked diligently for the American public, specifically the disenfranchised. He pushed forward pieces of legislation that leveled the playing field for the lower class, middle class, people of color, women, gays, lesbians and immigrants. But his life’ work would be that of widening the scope of health care within this country, which he did with legislation that increased coverage for mothers, children, veterans and scientific research.

While Kennedy dealt with his fair share of scandals, he will be remembered as the most successful Senator in American history. His legacy is one that reiterates the American dream, that we can all work towards a goal of equality, as well as riches. As an Irish-American and a Democrat, there is no more important political and American lineage than that of the Kennedys. The family gave a multitude of sacrifices to the American public and aided us in the journey to the progressive country we are today. Today, I will remember Senator Kennedy as a liberal with convictions and an uncanny ability to work across the aisle to make this country a better place for ALL OF US. Unfortunately, Teddy was not able to see the health care reform, that this country so much deserves, passed before he had passed on.

He is survived by his wife, Victoria and his three children. Sadly, he is the only male Kennedy within his generation to pass away from natural causes. The Senator will lie in repose in the John F. Kennedy library in Boston, MA and will be buried on Saturday in Arlington National Ceremony, alongside his brother President John F. Kennedy. RIP Senator Edward Kennedy, the lion sleeps tonight.

Vice President Joe Biden spoke about what Sen. Kennedy meant to him, throughout his personal and public life. Here is the eloquent send off VP Biden gave earlier today.

The coverage of his passing is everywhere, as it marks an end in a political chapter for America. Here are a few more memorials, remembrances and articles dedicated to the life and service of Senator Edward Kennedy.
