It was this weird interaction with an artist that I generally respect that has left a bizarre impression on me, and apparently it left something with Louis C.K. as well. Recently, I started recapping a few programs for DaemonsTV, one of them being C.K.’s new FX program, “Louie.” So this week’s episode, which dealt with the dreaded heckler, hit just a bit too close to home. While not identical to my real-life experience with Louis, it was eerily similar. And of course, our heated conversation didn’t take place till after his set, it still revolved around him considering himself a good person, thinking his pedophile jokes were okay, me being a not nice person and Todd Barry lurking the whole time.

This episode was probably a culmination of various women/hecklers Louis has had the opportunity to interact with over the years, but since I am conveniently one of those women, who happens to be blonde, bold, and drunk at the time, I can now say that I have made it. So TV writers, if you would like me to come down and yell at you for a bit so you have a plot/arc for an upcoming episode, let me know. I work freelance.

Sometimes bands are a pale imitation of their recorded selves live, but Warpaint exceeded my expectation and more with their impeccably tight and transcendental set, which had a sold out crowd entranced and dancing along. Coming off of their successful Bonnaroo set, the band stopped by NYC to play two sold out shows, and reintroduce themselves to the music scene that fell head over heels after last year’s CMJ performance. At the conclusion of last night’s show and their nearly ten minute jammy version of “Elephant”, which garnered them a spot on Pitchfork’s Top 100 of 2009, I felt like I was let in on a secret the whole music world will soon know about.

Its a rare treat nowadays to see a band right before they set the world on fire. Warpaint is the perfect assortment, with their hypnotic vocals reminiscent of folk chanteuses like Chan Marshall and Beth Orton, laid over intricate psychedelic/shoegazey style guitars and paired with an enthusiastic rhythm section. The four-piece, who all happen to be very attractive ladies, ooze cool on the stage, transitioning from a jammy breakdown to a full-force dance trance effortlessly. It’s like a doo wop girl group on acid, and its amazing. The band is comprised of Emily Kokal (vocals & guitar), Jenny Lee Lindberg (vocals & bass), Theresa Wayman (vocals & guitar) and the most recent addition to the lineup, drummer Stella Mozagawa. From last night’s performance, it seems that the ladies have found an inspiring rhythm, as to wander through vocal parts with a zeal and playfulness rarely seen, while maintaining the full integrity of the folk-meets-shoegaze instrumentals they are able to execute perfectly live.

One of my favorite songs is “Billie Holiday” from their John Frusciante mixed EP, where they artfully intertwine their acoustic ballad with Mary Wells’ “My Guy“, to create their own mesmerizing song. Not to get all girl crushy, but this band has what rock so desperately needs right now, enchanting vocals with psych-folk style riffs delivered with the technique and fluidity of a band three times their age. With a vast collection of influences ranging from Southern California psych rock to Britain girl groups to post-punk, Warpaint have etched out their own unique sound. The band is currently in the studio working on their first full length with producer Tom Biller, which will be released by Rough Trade Records later this year. Kokal has said that the full length will be a bit of a departure from the EP, and they are looking into bringing more electronic elements, as well as acoustic songs, to their well-orchestrated sound.Whichever way they go its damn near impossible for their full length not to be successful. And luckily for us New Yorkers, the ladies are set to settle down here next year, hopefully providing a lovely jolt to the somewhat over saturated rock scene here. So do yourself a favor, go out and get their EP, put it permanently on repeat and if you can, catch one of their inspiring live performances. And if you plan on attending Lollapalooza and/or the Reading Festival later this Summer, make sure to catch their highly anticipated sets. To describe Warpaintas “a band to watch” is an understatement.

Here’s the band’s video for their ‘hit’ “Elephants”. See what I’m saying folks?
This past Saturday, they finally got around to producing a short for the hilarious and catchy song, “Boombox” from their album Incredibad. The tune, which features Julian Casablancas singing about fingerless gloves and the power of the boombox. Not sure if the premiere of the short was delayed thanks to promotion of Julian’s solo efforts, but it was well worth the wait. Enjoy.

Last night, I finally got a chance to check out my new favorite psych rock outfit Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros. I have been listening to their hippie psych folk rock for months, thanks to Indie 103.1 and it was with baited breath I checked out their sold out show last night at the Music Hall of Williamsburg, to only be let down. Not sure if it was the crowd, who resembled a room full of extras from “The City” or the amount of booze I had to imbibe to tolerate said crowd, but the show was just ‘eh. Deep down, I’m a secret hippie and I adore a band that breaks out from under the standard rhythm and bass band sections – I mean this band had an accordion player and a real deal piano on stage. The band, which is lead by the former lead singer Ima Robot Alex Ebert, played well creating a folksy atmosphere only LA hippies could. And while most of the females in the room were swooning over Ebert and his bare chest, I fell in love with Jade Castrinos, whose sultry alto voice is a much needed jolt to the calm hippie vibe. The harmonies and playfulness between Jade and Alex is not only adorable, its essential to the band, as it emotes emotion for the band.
Overall, the band was great, but there wasn’t that feeling of “necessity” that most outfits have. As a huge Polyphonic Spree fan, it was weird to watch a band that had been touted as the next best thing without any of the emotion that one gets from a Spree show. While the songs were played well and it seemed that everyone was enjoying themselves, it also felt put together and a bit forced, almost gimmicky. Granted, this really is the first big headlining tour for the band and they will most likely fall into a rhythm, last night was definitely not the experience I was expecting. Maybe I’ll just blame all those dang extras from “The City” for ruining the show and not the lukewarm band. Check out the video from the band’s hit “Home”, which gives you a pretty good feeling on what last night should have looked/felt like.

Sonic Youth, just released their SIXTEENTH album “The Eternal” on Matador Records, and I can not get enough of it. It seems as though with each album they make, I fall deeper in love with them. They closed out ;the concert series at McCarren Park pool in Williamsburglast year and it was amazing to see a band that have been together for this long, not only rock hard, but really appreciate each other as a band mates. With the video for their first single “Sacred Trickster”, they channel their NYC post punk roots, while remaining true to their quirky music video style . And in my mind, Kim Gordon will forever remain the coolness barometer for one time alterna tweens like myself. Enjoy!

The Tony Awards, which has been awarding excellence within Broadway and theater for 63 years now, took place last night and from reviews was one of the more successful recent productions of the program. Unfortunately, I missed the show because I was busy rocking out to Jane’s Addiction and NIN (more on that later) at Jones Beach, but thanks to the darling Neil Patrick Harris, the host for last night’s program, and his closing number, you can now know who walked away with a Tony in less than three minutes.

The performance, which was an ode to last night’s winners and losers, was a late edition to the show and NY Times goes into detail about how the hilarious number came to fruition. As it goes with live shows, there was a non-planned part of last night’s program that is getting coverage today. Bret Michaels, who performed with the cast of “Rock of Ages” the 80′s hair metal musical, was injured when a piece of scenery fell on him after he reportedly missed his mark. As of now, no serious injury was reported and his publicist has said that he did not break his nose as originally reported. Other than that, the show went off without a hitch, was filled with celebrities and over a half a dozen awards for the Broadway production of “Billy Elliot”. The three young actors who play Billy in the American version of the British adaptation of the 2000 film of the same name, were the first to ever receive a shared Tony for three performers. Here’s the full list of winners of the 63rd Annual Tony Awards.

Apparently, Im not the only one concerned. What do you think of the trailer?

Last night, “Whatever Works”, Woody Allen’s cinematic return to New York City, opened the Tribeca Film Festival last night. From early reviews, one can assume that Larry David steps into the quintessential neurotic role that Allen is so well known for pitch perfectly. And while the event was star-studded, with most of the costars of the film throwing praise at Woody Allen, not all the critics have been so favorable, questioning the romance between Mr. Larry David’s character and Evan Rachel Wood’s, who is about 30+ years junior to David. But lets not get it twisted, it seems that Allen’s return to New York might prove him well just yet, from some of the reviews. Either way, I am beyond bummed I was unable to attend, nor work the event, as I am doing a stint at Tribeca this go around. But any review will not hold me back when “Whatever Works” begins its limited release in theaters, beginning on June 19, 2009. Below is a snippet of the film that bring my favorite neurotic New Yorkers together.
