Wherever my political alliances lie, I have to say that the idea of a cable news network continuously providing only ONE side of the political story can not be deemed “fair and balanced”. With Palindemoneum taking over America, specifically in areas where they consider reporting first and knowledge second, it seems that whatever comes out of Sarah Palin’s mouth is thought of as gospel.
The other night Palin was a guest on (it pains me to write this) “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno”, where she not only charged that ALL media except for Fox News was providing editorials as opposed to factual news reporting, but was quoting the channel’s “Fair and Balanced” tag line as to her main reason to seek employment at the network. She also did stand-up, but that’s a whole other animal Im not getting into (until later today). This appearance seems to have sparked a reaction out of Jon Stewart, who in all honesty really needs no provoking when it comes to skewering Fox News employees. Stewart took some time to do reporting, collect facts and data and then come back at Palin and her assertation that Fox News is truly “fair and balanced”. And his aim was on Megyn Kelly, a recent darling of the network, who turned her Aryan features and appearances on “The O’Reilly Factor” into a daytime anchor gig. Recently, the bee in her bonnet has obviously been the Health care Debate and Kelly has repeatedly attacked that administration for continuing on with the bill. She charged that the majority of Americans are sick of (HAHA!) this bill battle and are against it. And to prove it, she managed to find four people over the age of 65, whom I can only assume receive health care and pensions from their previous jobs, as well as medicare, so the irony was apparently lost on both her and her research staff. And if there is one thing Jon can not handle, its messing with your numbers and proving your case. As Stewart learned from his “summit” with O’Reilly last month, opinions are for night time news editorial programs and day time is where the real new is provided on Fox News. Sadly, Kelly might not have learned this before discussing the Health Care Summit. Here’s Stewart confronting this “fair and balanced” coverage on “The Daily Show”.

Similar to the telethons that were produced in the wake of tragedies and disasters like 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina, musical acts and celebrities will perform and take donation calls to assist relief efforts and non-profits sending much needed help to Haiti. The program will be broadcast on most major networks as well as streamed live on YouTube. And beginning tomorrow, all of the performances will be available for download on iTunes, with all of the proceeds donated to Hope for Haiti. This drama going on over at NBC is really reaching a new level. Late yesterday, we heard that Jay Leno has negotiated a deal with NBC to take back “The Tonight Show” at 11:35PM. The deal is allegedly still in the works, as Conan O’Brien declared earlier this week that he would not remain host to the program if its time slot was moved, making room for another Leno late night show. The drama remains a constant in other late night hosts monologues, but Jimmy Kimmel upped the anti last night with a visit to Leno’s soon to be defunct show, skewering him repeatedly. Kimmel did the 10 @ 10 Q & A skit on Leno’s and went for the jugular, continuously referencing Leno taking back “The Tonight Show” from O’Brien.

And beyond other late night hosts, like Kimmel and Dave Letterman taking sides, now NBC executives are sticking their noses into the late night drama. Dick Ebersol, chairman of NBC Universal Sports, has come out behind his fellow suits at NBC and went on record calling O’Brien gutless and a failure. He went on to say that Leno is unbeatable in the ratings and that this whole mess is really just because Conan failed to live up to the expectations of the host of this caliber of program. “I like Conan enormously personally,” Mr. Ebersol said. “He was just stubborn about not being willing to broaden the appeal of his show.” Essentially, NBC didn’t want Conan for Conan, they wanted him to be the host of “The Tonight Show” and apparently those are two totally different things. And apparently, O’Brien is not wasting any time looking for a new place, with the most recent rumor pointing out a possible move to FOX. While I hope O’Brien finds another TV home, and soon, I can’t help but worry that moving to just another major network will continue to limit the type of comedy Conan and his program became famous for. His original program was filled with irreverent jokes and witty humor, something that is rare on the late night circuit. And I am not the only person in the blogosphere worrying about another network toying around with the program we Conan fans came to love. Dan Frommer at The Business Insider believes a move to a cable network, like an HBO, would allow O’Brien to really put together a program that suits him and his staff’s talent, as opposed to relying on nightly guests to liven up the program. I believe this type of move, a more skilled and tactical move is a much smarter and safer move for the show. Just look at Bill Maher? When he was canceled from ABC, another network program would have continued to limit the type of program he wanted his show to evolve into, but his home at HBO as allowed both his show and him as a political commenter to flourish. If Conan is given the right placement, he would be able to really stretch his comedic muscles, as well as production budget.

I have been holding off all day to write something about September 11th. It’s one of those things, as a New Yorker that is difficult to move past and yet even more of an obstacle to delve into. I have read some truly amazing and personal pieces online today from news sources and Tumblr accounts. People sharing their experiences from that day, be it from a building down the block from the Twin Towers or across the country in Los Angeles. As a NYC resident, there are reminders every where, from the train line missing a stop, the still empty pit where two massive buildings once stood, the constant police drills, 9/11 bumper stickers, memorial tattoos and other things that seem to immortalize that day beyond just the history.

I remember waking up that day, after the towers were hit and me fearing the worst and hoping we would all find a way out of this. And while the horror of watching the events unfold over and over again on cable news was enough to give anyone some sort of stress disorder, I like to think of that day as the moment that my life took on a deeper meaning. I realized that day, after watching people fear for the lives and thousands of them losing theirs, that the time to be scared to engage in one’s life is over. I became invested in politics and aware of what was going on in my government and wanted to participate in making this place better. I like to think that 9/12 was the day that I got balls in regards to my own life and began going out there and attempting to get what I wannted. And I dont mean that in a selfish or silly way, but honestly that day opened my eyes to the fact that your life can not be planned, the future can not be told and you need to make every day count.

I wanted to discuss the brilliant article Pareene contributed over at Gawker, which called out Glenn Beck and his crew for looking upon 9/12 as some sort of joyous day, where America was harmonious. It wasn’t if you lived in NYC or if you had a family member who worked in the twin towers or the pentagon or within the military. On that day you were scared of what was to come and how you could move on and no amount of sticky American flags on the back of cars and empty promises like “These colors don’t run” could take back those events. We were united, but united due to fear. Politics still reared its ugly head, the media still covered up some things and nearly 4,000 families mourned their missing loved ones. And while I found a courage that day it wasn’t because of some false harmony pumping through NYC. It was because for the first time in my entire life this country was no longer protected, meaning neither was I. It was the day that I became an adult and had to face the harsh realities of the things that surround us in our cities, states and the world. There is nothing that can erase the memory of the feeling I had in my gut that day. And there is nothing that can erase from our collective memories, but hopefully as the years pass, and we as a nation evolve, much like I did that day, we can learn to find a peace with the evils of the world and the inadequacies of our own selves.

Walter Cronkite, anchor and journalist, has died at the age of 92. Cronkite, “the most trusted man in America”, during his 50+ years in journalism had covered the assasinations of President Kennedy, Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert F. Kenney, our landing on the moon, the Vietnam War, the Watergate scandal, various Olympic games and a slew of other monumental historical moments for America and the world. His credibility and his trust worthy voice will be sadly missed, especially in today’s world where it seems journalistic integrity and neutrality are slipping away. He is survived by his three children and four grandchildren.

Let’s get all artsy and fartsy up in here. On Tuesday, I had the pleasure of attending POPRALLY at MOMA event here in New York City with my very talented artist boyfriend. Department of Eagles were premiering their brand spanking new video, courtesy of acclaimed music video director Patrick Daughters and artist extraordinaire Marcel Dzama. The band, after the video played and the collaborators behind it discussed their processes, performed a very special set. The video, below, is wonderful and really pulls in the feeling of Dzama’s work. Marcel is like an art god in my house, so it’s wonderful to see him expanding his role within the art world and moving into the music frontier. And Daughters himself is virtually synonymous with indie and music video nowadays. It was also really interesting to hear a dicsussion on what it takes nowadays to make an actual seamless and beautiful video. Dzama and Daughters(the part played by Spike Jonze for the night) discussed collaborating with the band to what they felt worked with the song and we then heard from the choreographer, who stated that all the parts within the video were played by only six dancers, who made up two armies. Cole from “The Mill”, the genius special effects house, then discussed briefly how they were able to take images filmed in front of a blank screen and turn them into moving images that fit the Dzama aesthetic and felt indicative of the band’s music. We also heard from the video’s producer from The Director’s Bureau on the agony of getting videos produced nowadays.(which I will discuss in a future post this weekend).
Here’s the gloriously bloody video for “No One Does It Like You”……

I left that evening buzzed from the free Grolsch, excited about listening to Department of Eagles (You need to check them out if you haven’t!) and wondering about the state of music videos. I also left with a Dzama poster and excited for the next PopRally event.

What do you think of the video? Does it fit the song? Do we think Dzama found a new calling?

If this poster doesn’t get you excited for the upcoming live action version of “Where the Wild Things Are”, I don’t know what will. A Spike Jonze fan site has been on the lookout for images for the adaptation of the beloved children’s novel and they found this poster within Nickelodeon’s Nick Magazine. The announcement of the movie last year had sparked many a pop culture junkie and movie fanatic to wonder how the brave Spike Jonze would tackle the interpretation of an illustrated children’s novel. And from the poster and early photographs floating around the web, it seems he might have been able to get it right. Jonze avoided the overused used CGI crutch in so many movies nowadays and decided to have the famous oversized monsters be created with suits. From the poster, I can already imagine how wonderful this will come across on the screen.
The movie, based on the children’s book by Maurice Sendak, is about a boy named Max who after being punished for his mischievous behavior finds himself lost in adventures where he finds the “wild things”. Jonze is not only directing the big screen adaptation, but he penned the screenplay as well. The movie stars such big names as Forest Whitaker, James Gandolfini, Paul Dano, Catherine Keener and Catherine O’Hara. And we will get to see a snippet of the film when the trailer premieres in two weeks, with a place before the highly anticipated “Monsters vs. Aliens”. “Wild Things” is currently set for an October 16, 2009 release date, per Warner Brothers.

Here we go. I have had reservations on getting into this topic here on Spielster. I discussed it briefly after The Grammys because it was way too big of a story to just let slip by. Personally, the heaviness and reality of this story is one that can no longer be skirted by myself, so I apologize to anyone who just wants a fun little Friday post.

Last night, TMZ, of course, posted a photograph of Rihanna, which was apparently leaked to them by members of the LAPD. The picture, which yes I have seen, but will not be posting here, is a very sad one and it showcases the many bruises and lacerations allegedly given to the singer on the eve of the Grammys by her boyfriend Chris Brown.

At first, I wasn’t sure what to feel about the picture being everywhere, the near animalistic glee some bloggers and people in the media had for putting it on their site or covering it in their stories. It’s bothersome to many that an assault of this caliber could be so mishandled and that because the victim in question happens to be a celebrity they are not afforded the same rights to privacy that you and I would have if we were in a similar situation. There is a huge part of me that believes these pictures should have never been shown to the public. I mean what if she was raped? Would we find comfort in those pictures? On the other hand, seeing these pictures, viewing the damage someone did to her makes the story REAL. It no longer caps it as a celebrity gossip story and gives it merit and legs and makes us all feel like it happened to some one we know. But does the public have the right to own her pain and her embarrassment?

And on that note, in an odd way, I am glad this has come to light so I can understand what kind of person Chris Brown is. For way too many years, men were able to get away with this stuff, especially powerful men, with no repercussions. It was a symptom of America and it was overlooked. I would hope that many more powerful men in Hollywood would have the balls to come out and say “This is not okay!”. I wish that Al Sharpton was protesting this more than a chimpanzee comic run in the NY Post. I wish Russell Simmons was saying – you can not do this. And believe me, I know there is outcry from the African American community, but I wish it was on a much larger level. And because this is a broader issue and not symptomatic to just one race, I wish that women’s advocacy programs were being chatted up on TV about the incident as well, but they aren’t. I wish people had the balls to stand up and say “Women are not your punching bags. They are not here for your adornment.” We have come a long way ladies – this is for sure. I don’t want victims to be publicly lauded as spokespeople for strength unless they choose to do so. I wish she had the ability to have kept this quiet. I wish that the LAPD managed to not screw up another celebrity case and have some sort of tact when it comes to victims. And wish more than anything that she didn’t have to go through this. Unfortunately, I ain’t Jack Shepard, so my wishes will not be granted. But I hope that a positive comes out of this. If one girl, one woman steps away from a relationship that she is in where she is being abused, this picture might have just been worth it. The dialog is open and hopefully we will not longer be afraid to discuss the issues that are clouded in shame and anger.
