Love her or hate her, its pretty difficult not to be completely enthralled with Courtney Love — which is why Vh1 gave the rocker her own “Behind The Music“. Last week I told you about the two-hour special, which premiered this past Monday, that gave us an inside look into glorious crazy that is Courtney. From Courtney’s early childhood, where she was abandoned by nearly every family member, to her search for success in Hollywood, it was riveting to see the usually eccentric Love being frank and openly discussing the dark periods of her life. Love described her inherent awareness that she would one day be famous, her quest to lead the biggest rock band and her self-sabotage of the success she so desperately needed.

One of the qualities I have always loved in Courtney is her sheer ambition, and the fact that she has never let it get in her way. While this helped her succeed with her band Hole, it has also been the reason for her many mental breakdowns and her various issues with her daughter Frances Bean. “BTM” tackled the 90′s answer to Romeo & Juliet/John & Yoko/Sid & Nancy with a frankness rarely seen when it comes to Courtney and Kurt Cobain’s love affair. And it was oddly refreshing to finally hear folks who actually KNEW Kurt describe his depression, his love of his daughter and wife and his inability to cope with his life anymore. Mixed in with the media backlash and overwhelming depression that Courtney faced after Kurt’s death was her band Hole finally reaching the big time with the release of “Live Through This” (which in my opinion should be mandatory listening for any teenage girls aged 12 -15). We got a behind the scenes look at the full on meltdown of Courtney, her losing custody of her daughter multiple times and finally, her arrival in Hollywood. Love’s band went on to another successful record with “Celebrity Skin“, which coincided with Love’s success in the movie business and her four-year relationship with “The People Vs. Larry Flynt” costar Ed Norton. Love discussed her various love affairs with Billy Corgan, Ed Norton and Trent Reznor, which led to one of the funniest quotes from the show “Don’t call your band Nine Inch Nails if you’ve got a three inch one”. For a look at all the gems, check out Jezebel‘s amazing video of the goodies dished out by Love.

I will watch a “Behind The Music” on just about anyone, but this episode was a true classic. Courtney Love is truly a force, be it for good or bad. And I’m sure its been one hell of a ride to be her child or close friend, but those of us lucky enough to be just far enough away from her, she can remain one of the true bold role models of a generation of women who won’t give in or give up. The special only emphasized the love I have for this woman, who won’t apologize for being a bitch. And it has also had me addicted to Hole’s Pandora station all day (VIVA THE ’90s!!!). After the show, I just wanted to dye my hair, open up an issue of Sassy and start writing lyrics about my feelings. Instead, Im just blogging away, but I guess that’s the 2010 version of being an affected tween, right?

The program will re-air all week on Vh1 and is currently available in entirety on Vh1.com.

The magnificent Courtney Love will be telling all, and refreshingly it won’t be through her Twitter account. The kooky rock icon got her own “Behind the Music” and it will premiere this Monday. When I caught the commercial for the special yesterday I literally shrieked with glee. My obsession with Love began in my early tweens when she was the living embodiment of rock to me. She was like the missing love child of Jim Morrison and Led Zeppelin, so different from the Riot Grrls and folk singers I had been into before she came into my life. Her brash ego made her alarming to so many and caused a hatred rarely seen in so many rock fans. She was the 1990’s answer to Yoko Ono, but with even more vitriol sent her way.

Throughout the years, her music has gone from epic to less than relevant and her recent public battle with her and Kurt’s daughter France Bean was tasteless and sad, but she will always be Courtney Love. The rock chick who pulls no punches, holds nothing back and gave a generation of chicks the balls to say “F U!”. Check out this three-minute clip of Monday’s show and tell me you aren’t excited to invite Love into your house to dish on everything from Kurt Cobain to motherhood to Trent Reznor’s penis size.
The musician is best known for his lead role in Big Star, who was supposed to play a show this Saturday at SXSW. While they might not have received mainstream recognition, the band’s power pop effect can be found on records from R.E.M., Beck and most obviously, The Replacements, whose song ‘Alex Chilton’ praised the singer and his music.

I first encountered Chilton as a young kid when I became obsessed with ‘The Letter’ by his band The Box Tops. I would listen to it on repeat until I actually had to replace the compilation tape it was on.

And I am not the only one who seems to be affected his death, with the outpouring of love and appreciation that was tweeted, posted, blogged and uploaded in the past 24 hours. Chilton also received an unlikely memorial on the floor of the House of Representatives today courtesy of Rep. Steve Cohen (D) of Tennessee, who was a fan of Chilton’s work since the Box Tops.

Who knows if this weekend’s performance could have opened Big Star to a whole new audience and propelled the small time, yet inspiring band to a new level. Sadly, we will never know. Chilton was survived by his wife, Laura and son, Timothy.

I can always get behind a bashing on Damien Hirst. Recently, Morrissey interviewed his close friend and visual artist Linder Sterling for INTERVIEW magazine and the two discussed the abhorrent usage of dead animals in Hirst’s artwork. As a fellow vegetarian, I can understand what prompted Morrissey to lash out at Hirst. Damien has used multiple animal corpses as “art pieces” and his most famous of those type can be seen at the MET, which is a shark encased in formaldehyde. Morrissey, within the interview, called for Hirst’s head “to be kept in a bag”, and Linder called out the artist for his unnecessary “funerary”. Linder also said, “How many halved calves suspended in formaldehyde does the world need? To my way of thinking, none.”

Now don’t feel too bad for Hirst. The artist pulls in millions of dollars for his work and has become the new punching bag for the mainstream art world – and he is loving it. Hirst is one of the wealthiest working artists ever and scored the largest payday of any artist at a one-person auction. While I appreciate Morrissey and Linder calling him out for his misuse of animals, I think the more important quote from Morrissey came later in the interview when he called out the media and their “obsession with Hirst’s millions” which “reduces him to a mere factory outlet”. The article also discusses Linder and Morrissey’s 30-year friendship, which was the basis of The Smiths’ song “Cemetery Gates“.

I could go on a five hour tangent on how amazing Ryan Gosling is, but I’ll save that for another time. My fiance introduced me to ‘Dead Mans Bones’, a music group comprised of Gosling, Zach Shields and most of the time a childrens choir from the Silverlake Conservatory of Music. With its eerie vocals, choral background, perky melodies and adoration for well dead things, this music is a shining example of how celebs can music right. The band have performed a handful of gigs, incorporating local childrens choirs at each event, and Pitchfork put together a multi-act doc on a recent gig here in NYC at Le Poison Rouge. Their album, out on ANTI Records, showcases the eerie sensibility that comes from a person who might have spent just a bit too much time at the Haunted Mansion as a kid and obviously loves 60′s girl groups. Think Spector meets Disney’s Music From the Parks, with a hint of David Lynch, just without all the murder and mayhem. Enjoy.

Whatever you may think about OK Go, you have to give them credit for continuously bringing it with their music videos. I am convinced that if MTV was functioning like it did back in the 90′s, they would be one of the biggest bands in America if only in part due to their clever music videos. The band teamed up with Syyn Labs and director James Frost to create the four-minute Rube Goldberg machine to be featured in the video. Check out the a-maze-ing (get it?) video!

Also, if you are a Southern California resident, you might want to check out the OK Go event at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art this Friday. It will be an acoustic performance of the band, as well as a screening and discussion of the video.

You have less than 90 days to plan your heat fueled excursion into the desert to enjoy the sounds of Jay-Z, Pavement, Muse, Thom Yorke, Them Crooked Vultures, Gorillaz, Faith No More and about two hundred other bands. Coachella is upon us, once again ushering in the concert festival season. I am beyond excited to see such a full grouping of bands and the much anticipated American reunions of Faith No More and Pavement! I have to say I am pretty pissed that Blur wont be finding their way there, but what can you do? Coachella will unofficially open up the summer festival season on April 16, 2010 in Indio, CA and tickets go on sale this Friday, January 22 at 10AM, with a limited amount of discounted three day packages.

Who are looking forward to checking out???

The highly anticipated biopic on the all girl rock band who put a strangle hold on the music industry in the late 1970′s has finally hit the web. And if these clips are any indication, Kristen Stewart, Dakota Fanning and the rest of the ladies fully embodied what it takes to be in The Runaways. The film will premiere at the Sundance Film Festival next month and hits theaters nationwide in March 2010. Rumors are the film’s director wasn’t the most pleasant to work with, but from the small teaser clip here, I think we might have a great biopic. Check out the trailer…..
