Last week I told you about the two-hour special, which premiered this past Monday, that gave us an inside look into glorious crazy that is Courtney. From Courtney’s early childhood, where she was abandoned by nearly every family member, to her search for success in Hollywood, it was riveting to see the usually eccentric Love being frank and openly discussing the dark periods of her life. Love described her inherent awareness that she would one day be famous, her quest to lead the biggest rock band and her self-sabotage of the success she so desperately needed.

One of the qualities I have always loved in Courtney is her sheer ambition, and the fact that she has never let it get in her way. While this helped her succeed with her band Hole, it has also been the reason for her many mental breakdowns and her various issues with her daughter Frances Bean. “BTM” tackled the 90′s answer to Romeo & Juliet/John & Yoko/Sid & Nancy with a frankness rarely seen when it comes to Courtney and Kurt Cobain’s love affair. And it was oddly refreshing to finally hear folks who actually KNEW Kurt describe his depression, his love of his daughter and wife and his inability to cope with his life anymore. Mixed in with the media backlash and overwhelming depression that Courtney faced after Kurt’s death was her band Hole finally reaching the big time with the release of “Live Through This” (which in my opinion should be mandatory listening for any teenage girls aged 12 -15). We got a behind the scenes look at the full on meltdown of Courtney, her losing custody of her daughter multiple times and finally, her arrival in Hollywood. Love’s band went on to another successful record with “Celebrity Skin“, which coincided with Love’s success in the movie business and her four-year relationship with “The People Vs. Larry Flynt” costar Ed Norton. Love discussed her various love affairs with Billy Corgan, Ed Norton and Trent Reznor, which led to one of the funniest quotes from the show “Don’t call your band Nine Inch Nails if you’ve got a three inch one”. For a look at all the gems, check out Jezebel‘s amazing video of the goodies dished out by Love.

I will watch a “Behind The Music” on just about anyone, but this episode was a true classic. Courtney Love is truly a force, be it for good or bad. And I’m sure its been one hell of a ride to be her child or close friend, but those of us lucky enough to be just far enough away from her, she can remain one of the true bold role models of a generation of women who won’t give in or give up. The special only emphasized the love I have for this woman, who won’t apologize for being a bitch. And it has also had me addicted to Hole’s Pandora station all day (VIVA THE ’90s!!!). After the show, I just wanted to dye my hair, open up an issue of Sassy and start writing lyrics about my feelings. Instead, Im just blogging away, but I guess that’s the 2010 version of being an affected tween, right?

The program will re-air all week on Vh1 and is currently available in entirety on Vh1.com.

Last week, MTV confirmed what we knew was inveitable after last season’s lackluster ratings for their one-time money machine, “The Hills” – it has been canceled. While I have gone from pure obsession to pure loathing of almost all things ‘The Hills’, I am glad that this soap meets reality program can hopefully die with some dignity. The new, and apparently final, season premieres April 27th, and will follow the tabloid fodder that the chicks are experts at riling up. From Heidi Montag’s radical plastic surgery earlier this year to Kristin Cavallari’s alleged drug addiction and everything inconsequential in between, we will hopefully figure out why we tuned into this farce of reality to begin with. Check out the trailer for the upcoming season.

The Hills – MTV Shows

Now, I know I have gone on the record here before pledging my love for this show and its theatrics, I still hate the lack of reality in its content. For some reason, the producers have made it their business to actually prevent the viewers at home to watch what these folks are really up to, and just keep on showing staged lunches, club nights and crying fits. So, it seems from the trailer, we might actually get to see what has REALLY been going on while the only cameras catching the action were those of the paparazzi. But by now, can the cast even discern whats real and whats for TV? I guess we’ll have to see and find out.

Well congrats is definitely in order for the young stars of MTV’s “Jersey Shore”. They held out for raises, which they so rightfully deserved, and are coming back for a second season of the bizarre pop culture hit. MTV announced this weekend that indeed the cast members will once again be fist pumpin’ and apparently getting $10K an episode to do it. Though the fist pumpin’ and parting will most likely not be going down in Seaside Heights. What I can only assume has become both a logistic and legal nightmare for MTV and their production crew will now force the network to look for a new home for Snooki and her “Wahs”. Rumored locations that the producers have been scouting are the Hamptons, Delaware and Rhode Island, and I m sure once they decide the location will be secret for less than 24 hours. And while the main 6 cast members are definitely returning, MTV has yet to confirm the return of Angelina, who I can only assume quickly realized her rash decision to leave the house that pink built was the wrong way to go.

So to avoid any fading in the stars they accidentally created, MTV has sent Snooki, The Situation and Pauly D to almost any public function, keeping their names and faces in the press and in the minds of millions. And I can only assume we can expect dozens of silly viral concoctions and celebrations of all things “Jersey Shore“, like the below video. Check out the “real” Situation and whats is really behind the lovable fist pumpers.

If this video is any indication, I think Snooki and Mike have very good prospects as comedic actors and could easily be pulling one on us. But I will continue to believe in the sincerity of the lovable guidos and guidettes we have all been smitten with since the premiere. What do you think the kids should do next? Present at the Oscars? Stop by Saturday Night Live? Take over for Jay Leno? Really, the skys the limit, well until the 15 minutes is truly up.

And finally there isthis hilarious little kid version from Babelgum, made in part by my talented friend Jon Pack, which was everywhere on the web earlier this week.

So will you be fist pumpin’ tonight with your poof and tan on? Hope so. And dont forget to do like me and Jersey Shore yourself. See that friggin Mona Lisa above – its me Snookified. Grab some jaeger, pickles and some ham and get the situation started. Ok so, its time for me to get to some GTL. Peace.

Wanna lose your lunch? Well have I got the perfect story to help. Last year, The Spielster looked at the surprisingly high salaries of the cast of “The Hills” and boy was it a shock. Gawker had released the specifics coincidentally the a week after Viacom, MTV’s parent company, had laid off nearly 800 employees. So when I learned that that Lauren Conrad was pulling in around $65K per episode for attempting conversation with ceiling eyes Audrina and pretending to go to college, I was a bit pissed. But those numbers were apparently nothing compared to the current pay days the cast is receiving. According to The Daily Beast, Lauren Conrad received $125K per episode during her last season, which I believe she spoke all about 50 words. Conrad’s contract also included a clause that no other co-star could earn as much as her. So while you are unemployed, LC was pulling in over a million bucks for a season of “The Hills”. The numbers continue to shock with Heidi Montag Pratt and Audrina Patridge are pulling in $100K an episode and newcomer or returnee, however you look at it, Kristin Cavallari is getting $90K an episode.

And while in some sick twisted way, I am still excited for the return of this show tonight on MTV, thanks to return of Cavallari, I can’t help but wonder if this money couldn’t go to, let’s say, some actual actors? I understand that this show is a gold mine for MTV. Besides the cast’s per episode numbers, overhead is quite low on a reality production. Sets are minimal, and actual businesses are killing themselves to get coverage on the show. Restaurants, clubs and businesses can increase their awareness with the general public by like 200% with just one five minute segment taking place on the show. Like Les Deux, a typical club in Hollywood that became a nationally known hot spot, and essentially a tourist trap. The Hills became MTV’s west coast version of “Sex and the City”, making places successful with just a mention. Record companies were clamoring to get their bands music, if lucky enough some actual face time, on the program. Companies like Teen Vogue, People’s Revolution, Bolthouse Productions and Epic Records all gave internships and jobs to cast members for screen time and additional coverage. And MTV actually created a spin off for Whitney and moved her to NYC so they could cash in on the industries here. When all is said and done, I can not believe that Lauren Conrad was pulling in millions for “being herself”. “The Hill’s” has essentially lost the idea that it is a reality show, since what is caught by the cameras is actually not their real life. They afford lavish homes, dinners out, trips and great cars, because of their MTV paychecks and sponsorship deals. Assistant gigs at styling agencies and record companies do not come with million dollar paychecks or centerfolds in <a href=http://www.playboy.com">Playboy and Maxim. And in a weird way, I feel that MTV, while certainly successful with this brand, could have really done something great by showing ACTUAL WORKING PEOPLE. I’m still tuning in tonight and most likely, so are you, if only just to see Spencer in a cowboy hat.

When it comes to “The Hill”s, I feel like Al Pacino in the Godfather II because every time I think I’m over this show “they pull me back in”. And the “they” I’m speaking of are the magical elves who edit a season worth of eye rolling, back stabbing, dramaz and chic LA eateries into a three minute clip that has me curled up on the floor counting the days until this shit shack starts up all over again.

I promised myself that after last year’s season, where we watched Speidi become one in the eyes of God and 30 paparazzi photogs and Lauren Conrad, the star of the show, set sail into bigger and better pastures, I would NOT be returning for the next season of the reality-soap. But then Kristin Cavallari came back into the picture and I knew there would be nothing that could stop me from returning to the drug that is “The Hills”. Earlier this week MTV released a trailer for the newest season, declaring “The Bitch is Back” and I couldn’t be more stoked (DONT JUDGE ME!!!). Cavallari has always been an ace in hole when it comes to bringing drama to an MTV reality program and she was the only reason I ever tuned into the “OC” rip-off, “Laguna Beach”. And I love how MTV isn’t even hiding the fact that this show is no longer reality, but really an updated evening soap opera for all us under the age of 35. This season, we will watch as Spencer wears a cowboy hat, the other Montag moving into boozeville, Audrina and her tatted sister rolling their eyes, Lo grabbing camera time and Cavallari bringing the fun back to Los Angeles. And if she has to sleep with Justin Bobby to do it, so be it.

My love for Mike Judge began early on, like most of my generation, with his animated duo “Beavis & Butthead”. You might remember them from back in the day when MTV was all about being on the cutting edge, alternative media and rockers? Well anyways, the two metal heads haven’t been heard from in awhile, but they returned to the forefront to assist Judge in promotion for his latest comedy “Extract”. The boys did a little fireside chat review of the movie, discussing the important plot points of big boobs, pool boys and boning. Man, I’ve missed these dillweeds. Anyways, the film looks great, mainly because Judge really has an ability to mock the ridiculousness that is business and office life like no other. He also has a way of telling stories about regular people in an interesting way.

Thanks to my friends over at Miramax, I will be viewing this film tomorrow and luckily meeting Mike Judge himself. So of course, Friday will essentially be “Extract” day here at The Spielster, which is convenient since thats the day it opens in theaters nationwide! In the meantime, check out Beavis and Butthead doing their thing. Oh and don’t worry, I will pressure Judge into reviving these characters in some sort of media vehicle a lot tomorrow night.

Also if you are in the NYC area, Whitney, the pop culture goddess behind Pop Candy, will be doing a Q&A with Mike Judge at the Soho Apple Store tonight at 7PM! More details on this here.
