Actor and one time teen idol Corey Haim has passed away at age 38 from an apparent overdose. The man who met fame, fortune and sadly, his demons in the 1980′s with his partner in madness Corey Feldman, was pronounced dead at his Los Angeles home this morning by LAPD. The actor had recently been suffering from flu-like symptoms and passed out in front of his mother at around 2:30AM, and was pronounced dead at a Burbank hospital a half an hour later.

While Haim had fallen on hard times the past few years, even at one point selling teeth and hair to cover his debts courtesy of addiction, he will be best remembered as the free spirit and adorable teen idol he once was. His career blossomed overnight and his starring roles in films like Lucas and The Lost Boys confirmed that not only was he a heartthrob, but he had the chops to succeed in this business. He partnered with Corey Feldman, the duo was dubbed “The Coreys” by the 80′s media, for seven films, including Lost Boys, License to Drive and my personal favorite,Dream a Little Dream (which I purchased from a local video rental place for $20). “The Coreys” were synonymous with partying, young Hollywood, box office success and 80′s excess. Haim found himself at the end of the decade with a crazy drug habit, fledgling career and an even sadder private life. Haim all but disappeared in the early 90′s with flop after flop at box office and addictions eating away at him.
After a drug induced stroke, Haim found himself on the road to recovery in 2004 and returned in 2007 to the spotlight with his reality show “The Two Coreys“, which followed Feldman and Haim for their quest to move back on top of the Hollywood food chain. The show lasted two seasons and brought the best friends back together and as Defamer ridiculed to the point of not on the reality program, back and ready to work. Haim saw little lift to his career from the program and recently just wrapped up production the thriller, American Sunset. Today, Haim passed away, ending a possible career resurrection and the possibility of a happy ending.

As a child, there were few things better than Corey Haim. His looks, charm and humor were the essential pre-teen package and I would have followed him to the ends of the earth. While someone dying THIS young is tragic and sad, what is really sad about the whole thing is that its not surprising. Haim was a casualty of Hollywood, and by that I mean a child star who was used up until he couldn’t give anymore, and then medicated to hide the pain. Its common practice in Hollywood, but sometimes there are those folks that actually deserve to continue to work, who have a gift and should be respected. Unfortunately, Haim had to battle various demons while attempting to take back his career, and his childhood was riddled with divorce, abuse and overt exposure to adult themes.

The glimmer and hope that was once his signature fell away as time went on and sadly, its not an easy thing to get back. As the similar child star story continues to play out, the pain of being unloved as an adult is sometimes too much for them to handle. And Haim is just another story to add to the growing pile of stars who taken their own lives, consciously or accidentally. Haim is the reason I actually added a category Sadness to my blog, because you could see that deep down all the guy wanted to do was act and entertain the masses. He was not happy with addiction and was even more depressed by his lack of ability to truly kick what ended up taking his life. Hopefully, we can learn the proper way to treat people in this business, avoid tearing them down and learn that medicating does not always “fix” the problem. But I can only assume that this will not be the last sad story I need to recap on this blog. Little boy lost, Corey Haim will be greatly missed and I would like to personally thank him for bringing hours of entertainment to my life. Aloha Corey. And hopefully you can now truly rest.

Let’s remember him this way, shall we?

Wowza, Scientology can not seem to catch a break. When the crazy pants religion isn’t getting skewered in the press or mocked by cartoons, its own spokespeople or followers are doing the damage. The most recent embarrassment to come to the “church” is the departure of long time Scientologist and successful screen writer Paul Haggis.

The Oscar winning writer, scribe of “Million Dollar Baby” and “Crash”, wrote a scathing and quite revealing letter to the church about his necessary departure from the religion. Haggis, who of late was not an active member in the church, was appalled by the church’s public participation in Proposition 8, the piece of legislation that made gay marriage in California illegal. Haggis was upset over the church’s position on civil rights and their recent in promoting conspiracy theories with multiple publications.

The letter addressed to Scientology’s spokesperson Tommy Davis said,

The church’s refusal to denounce the actions of these bigots, hypocrites and homophobes is cowardly. I can think of no other word. Silence is consent, Tommy. I refuse to consent.

I joined the Church of Scientology thirty-five years ago. During my twenties and early thirties I studied and received a great deal of counseling. While I have not been an active member for many years, I found much of what I learned to be very helpful, and I still apply it in my daily life. I have never pretended to be the best Scientologist, but I openly and vigorously defended the church whenever it was criticized, as I railed against the kind of intolerance that I believed was directed against it. I had my disagreements, but I dealt with them internally. I saw the organization – with all its warts, growing pains and problems – as an underdog. And I have always had a thing for underdogs.

But I reached a point several weeks ago where I no longer knew what to think. You had allowed our name to be allied with the worst elements of the Christian Right. In order to contain a potential “PR flap” you allowed our sponsorship of Proposition 8 to stand. Despite all the church’s words about promoting freedom and human rights, its name is now in the public record alongside those who promote bigotry and intolerance, homophobia and fear.

This news, along with Davis’ freak out during an interview with Martin Bashir for ABC’s Nightline can not bode well for the church. Davis was unable to openly discuss the religion and refused to give Bashir a simple yes or no response in regards to published practices of Scientology. When the discussion came around the idea of Xenu, Davis freaked out, claimed bigotry and left the interview in a huff. This, the departure of Haggis, the recent legal attacks from both the German and French governments and the fallout of the death of John Travolta and Kelly Preston’s son has left a VERY bad taste in people’s mouths. Scientology, notorious for attack its dissenters, will have to act cautiously if it would like to get back at Haggis, as he expects. The last thing this religion needs is another log added to the fire of disbelief it has with the general public. As a gadfly on all things Scientology, this story just seems to be getting better, as more and more celebrities defect. But, as we have learned from the past, the church always finds its way and comes back stronger.

We’ll get to the Mad Men review in a bit, but lets get to the five things we missed over the weekend….

“District 9″, the little thriller that could, came in at number one at the box office this weekend. The low-budget sci-fi flick, written and directed by newcomer Neill Bloomkamp and starring a list of no-names, pulled in $37 Million this weekend, thanks to critical praise and a successful viral marketing campaign. And while the movie has only been in theaters three days, there is already talk for a sequel. Got to love Hollywood.

Earlier today, Good Morning America got the scoop (HAHAHAHAA) on the latest cast to grace the dancing stage for the always train wreck “Dancing with the Stars”. The only time I have ever caught this program is while Joel McHale was mocking it on “The Soup”, but I might have to check out this shit shack this season with this lineup? With the dance stylings of Melissa Joan “Clarissa Explains it All” Hart, Aaron Carter, Kelly Osborne, Donny Osmond, Kathy Ireland and TOM DELAY how could I pass it up? And yes you read correctly, Tom DeLay will be making me nauseous on a bi-weekly basis with his close proximity to spandex and half dressed ladies. This could be the most amazing season ever!

Holy C-Level Scandal! Rebecca Gayheart, best known as the Noxema Girl, and her husband, Eric Dane, Dr. McSteamy on “Greys Anatomy” have a new scandal to their list. Gawker and Fleshbot are reporting that the couple, along with Kari Ann Peniche, former Miss USA, have a very fun sex tape making the rounds. Scandal is nothing new for the couple. A few months ago, nude photos of Gayheart, allegedly smoking crack, taken by Dane popped up in the National Enqiuerer and Gayheart was arrested and found guilty of vehicular manslaughter in LA in 2001. Fleshbot is promising the entire video online tomorrow, but I’ll believe that when lawyers grow wings.

The anatomy of the douchebro who got a movie deal from a book deal from being a douchebro told so well through a movie trailer and The Hater.

Big Brother 11 has gone CRAZY! I have been fully addicted to this season of Big Brother, enthralled with the cult of Jessie, the love affair between Jordan and Jeff and learning the pronunciation of Coup D’etat by a Chicagoan, but the stuff that went down this weekend is nuts! Chima, who was Head of Household when Jeff used the magic power to oust Jessie, lost her mind after he left the house and began a vicious racist tirade on a Lebanese cast member, threatened to ruin and damage the other housemates property and broke production equipment before she was thrown out by the producers of the program. And while this drama has all been going down on the live feed and BB devoted blogs, the CBS edited programs have yet to even acknowledge the issue.

For a person who is this close to celebrating her 30th birthday, the excitement I have over the “Degrassi Goes Hollywood” movie might be shocking to you my dear readers. So you’ll just have to get over it and celebrate the genius that is Degrassi. For those of you not from Canada, without premium cable or who have spent the past few years on another planet, Degrassi is the amazing teen program, made popular by CTV and dragged over to the US, via the geniuses at Nickelodeon’s The N. For years, we have watched a few generations of the younger kids growing up, catching STDs, getting pregnant, stabbing each other, cutting themselves, starting rock bands, cheating on each other and all around being awesome. For this special full length feature, The N caught the Hollywood bug and had the gang head down to find some sunshine and typical industry drama. A few of the regulars are trying to become actors, one alum is now an all star emo musician and the other cast members seemed to just hitch a ride to the sunny life that goes with LA. “Degrassi Goes Hollywood”, which premieres tomorrow, will be ushered in with a full fledged 24 hour marathon of “Degrassi: The Next Generation”. So check out the trailer and get stoked for 24 full hours of the latest generation to call Degrassi their home. I can’t wait!

Ryan O’Neal, while being interviewed for Vanity Fair’s September cover story on his ex-wife Farrah Fawcett, went into full detail as to why any child of his should and probably does have a drug problem. The magazine was interviewing O’Neal for the story they did on the life and loves of Fawcett and O’Neal described her as the “love of his life”. Yet, Ryan had NO issue with attempting to chat up ladies at Fawcett’s funeral a few weeks back. Only problem is the lady he tried to get to hit was all too familiar with the skeeze, since it was his own daughter Tatum O’Neal.

Ryan told Vanity Fair, “I had just put the casket in the hearse and I was watching it drive away when a beautiful blonde woman comes up and embraces me. I said to her, ‘You have a drink on you? You have a car?’ She said, ‘Daddy, it’s me–Tatum!’ I was just trying to be funny with a strange Swedish woman, and it’s my daughter. It’s so sick.” I know I know, Im not sure why this asshole hasn’t been dragged out into the street yet and shot either? While O’Neal is a very twisted man, who used the passing of Fawcett as a way to grab time on TV and throughout magazines, this goes beyond gross and borders horrific. And what is really sad about it is when Vanity Fair contacted Tatum about the story she had this to say, “That’s our relationship in a nutshell. You make of it what you will. It had been a few years since we’d seen each other, and he was always a ladies’ man, a bon vivant.” Sad and horrific could not accurately describe what you must think of your father when he does these sort of things. But as Tatum said, she is completely used to the wacked out relationship her father and her share.

When Tatum was arrested last summer for attempting to purchase crack on the LES of Manhattan, I pointed blame on her father and mother for her many many deep seated issues. The abuse and neglect she has suffered is well known throughout the industry and become public knowledge after her tell all, A Paper Life, was published a few years ago. And while yes, at some point a child becomes an adult and must learn to somehow move on form the past, but how is that possible when every horrible and despicable thing your father does to you, like punching you when you win the Best Supporting Actress Oscar or hitting on you at your step-mother’s funeral, because public knowledge?

McMahon passed away at the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles, where he had been receiving treatment for his battle with pneumonia and cancer.

McMahon had a career in show biz that spanned over 60 years and for thirty of those years he found himself supporting the quintessential late night host Johnny Carson. In the 1980′s, McMahon expanded his brand with various pitch man gigs, like Publishers Clearing House, and was the host of “Star Search”. He was incredibly well liked in the business and even during difficult times, like his battle with cancer and the foreclosure of his Beverly Hills home, found a chance to laugh about it, remaining the consummate “laugh track”. McMahan is survived by his widow, Pamela McMahon and his six children. He will be greatly missed.

And to celebrate his life, let’s take a look at the second banana in action.

Last week, Page Six published one of their infamous blind items in the “Just Asking” column about a successful actor who will be taking time off from movie making to get a handle on his habits as opposed to working on his marriage, as he is reporting.
The Blind Item was….WHICH actor is on hiatus due to a drug relapse? He claimed he needed time off because of the heartbreak of his public split, but he’s actually headed to rehab.

From the chatter on the web and rumors in Hollywood, it seemed that the only likely actor to fit the bill was Sean Penn, who had been separated from his wife, Robin Wright Penn at the time. He was also fodder for the tabloids and gossip sites with his late night paling around with young actresses and bizarre behavior at clubs. And yesterday, EW.com reported that Penn has pulled out of the upcoming drama “Cartel”. Its also been reported that Penn will most likely drop out of the biopic of “The Three Stooges”, which was set for an August production start date. And on top of that we are hearing a slew of “sources close to Penn” being quoted throughout the blogosphere that the actor is really trying hard to work out things with his wife. For a man who usually has a distaste for the media, specifically that celebrating celebrity, its weird that we would all of a sudden hear so much about the struggle of his marriage. Either way, I do hope that if Penn is taking time off for personal reasons, be it the mending of his marriage or taking care of an addiction, he finds himself healthy, happy and back in the game in no time. I’m also pleased that he will be stepping away from “The Three Stooges” film, which I can only see as a whole lot of mess down the line.

What do you think?

So you might have heard that earlier this week Woody Harrelson, actor famous for running around naked and playing dumb dumb parts in movies, alledgedly attached a paparazzi photographer at Laguardia Airport here in NYC. Well according to Harrelson, the reason he attacked the photographer was because he thought he was a ZOMBIE! I mean, who hasn’t had one of those days where they are just aimlessly walking around a mall, airport or grocery store and is convinced the people in front of them is a zombie.

Woody went on to say that since returning from filming his upcoming flick “Zombieland”, which is obviously about zombies taking over the US, that he was still deep in character and confused the photog with a zombie. Now Harrelson isn’t exactly known for his intellect and in recent years, the actor has seemed to really go off the deep end, so this ridiculous story isn’t quite shocking. The actor was in another scuffle with a TMZ photog back in 2006, which lead to a civil suit against Harrelson. I for one hope that this becomes the new popular defense for starlets and actors alike, because we can all agree that there has to be zombies out there, right?
