I love watching Regis & Kelly. It’s sort of like an out of body experience where I get to see what a conversation between my grandma and myself would look like. Anyways, while I dressed for work the other day, I heard Kelly discussing the latest permanent addition to her skin. Kelly had just got her husband’s last name Conseulos tattooed on the inside of her wrist in lovely script. And funny enough, she got tattoed by my good friend Joseph at my fiancé’s old tattoo shop Saved in Williamsburg. The tattoo is lovely and I thought it was adorable that she wanted to commemorate her life technically as a Consuelos with a tattoo. Here’s video of Ripa discussing her ink with Regis….

And I’m not surprised Regis doesn’t get it, responses seen throughout blog comments all over the net really bothered me, especially as a lady with tats. While some of the comments were in support of Ripa and discussing the lack of pain that comes along with wrist tattoos, there were a lot of comments disparaging her, the shop and sadly her marriage. First, the work was done by one of the best in the city and possibly the country when it comes to script (not being biased, being honest). Since they have been married for 14 years and have three kids, I can’t imagine that a name tattoo now would do damage to their marriage and I think its cute they would want to celebrate that way. And yes, name tattoos can be an unconscious curse on marriages, but I don’t that is the case for all of them. But that’s not what really bothered me. The disparaging comments on her as a person, and as a lady, is really what got to me. In 2010, are we still so ass backwards that we think a beautifully executed last name in script on a wrist means dirty, tacky or worse, slutty? I get that tattoos aren’t every one’s thing – I’m not saying that you have to love hers or mine for that matter. But I think you need to be able to respect an adults decision to do what they want with their own body. Tattoos do not make you anything other than who you already are. Most of us use them as a commerative piece, a way to immediately immortalize a time in your life and others just like the way they look with a permanent collection on them. And they do not go hand in hand with bad, naughty or indecent behavior, as some small minded people still seem to think. I wonder if Mark had gotten her name tattooed on him woukd the commentary and the tone of the backlash have been the same. For some reason, I highly doubt that.

For some reason, I’ve had a difficult time capturing what I thought of The Boys are Back. It was a subtly emotional film, and for one that centered around the death of a mother, not your standard Hollywood fare. The film, which is based on Simon Carr’s 2001 memoir of the same name, stars Clive Owen as Joe Carr, a man’s man sportswriter who is unable to come to grips with the death of his wife, its affect on his family and having to actually be a father. I was moved at nearly every moment of the film. Watching Joe grasp the fact that his wife would soon be succumbing to her cancer and having to inform his six year old son was heart breaking. “Will she die by supper time? Will mummy die by bed time?” are questions that would only make sense to a child who can not fully grasp the concept of what the death of his mother actually means. As we watch Joe and Arty begin to create a life together, without the woman who kept things in order and made sure everyone was loved, you can’t help but feel the tension between the two men. Joe was never a man who felt he was capable at being a father, let alone a single dad. And just when the two were grasping what their relationship needed, Harry, Joe’s eldest son from a previous marriage, asks to spend some time with his dear old dad. We now learn why Joe believes he is a bad father, mainly because in effect he is, for letting his son live with his cold mother on the other side of the world. Harry moves to Australia and finds the once tidy and organized house, turns into a land of disarray, lacking rules, order and the coziness that goes along with a kept home. What follows is the struggle for all three boys to put the past behind them and move on with their version of a family. And with time, Joe learns that responsibilities are not always a negative thing and one should not just say yes to everything in order to not say no.

Thanks to Miramax and Melissa, I had the opportunity to sit down with Scott Hicks, the acclaimed director of the film, to discuss the movie in greater detail. The conversation helped me to understand why I was so emotionally involved in the film. The casting was spot on with Owen as the most effective sensitive man’s man I have seen in years, and the gentle artistry used by the two actors who played his sons was perfect. George MacKay who was the teenage Harry and Nicholas McAnulty, who played six-year old Arty, were perfect. McAnulty had never been on-screen before this movie, which Hicks believed helped him be authentic, especially in the case of dealing with such a heavy subject as the death of a child’s mother. Scenes like the one where Arty begins kicking the car seat and screaming were improved with the help of McAnulty, which was allegedly a bit unsettling to the normally rehearsed Owen. And for me, the film’s draw went above the actual content of the story and the perfect cast, and it really hit me with its beautiful shots and painstakingly curated score and soundtrack. Hicks explained that once he found the property he wanted the Carr home to reside on, he built the house on the spot. This helped with the feeling that home was in fact a home, and not a set on a sound stage. The lush landscapes and the palette of the film led to the subtly emotional strings that would continue to pull on my tear ducts throughout. But what I felt was the true ace in hole for the water works party was the usage of Sigur Ros throughout the film. In addition to the ethereal score from Hal Lindes, the songs provided by the Icelandic band meshed incredibly well with the overall tone of the film and the beauty that was going on behind the drama. Originally, Hicks was afraid to put Sigur Ros’ songs within the film during the editing process, as they tend to be more difficult in their licensing allowances, but once they saw the music teamed with the film they were on board. I mean how can you go wrong with a film about the life that comes along after death, with music provided by Sigur Ros and beauty provided by South Australia. I really appreciated that this film stayed away from the standard cheesy lesson learning tendencies Hollywood gives to family dramas. This movie, in essence, was about what we must do once we are forced to do things that are not only difficult, but are essential for our well being. It covers the idea of what true mourning is, simply a process that changes on a day to day basis and yes, it made me shed more than a handful of tears. The tears were shed though in celebration of the emotions behind the film and for those interested in a smart drama, I can not recommend this movie enough.

The Boys are Back opened in limited release on September 25th.

I have been holding off all day to write something about September 11th. It’s one of those things, as a New Yorker that is difficult to move past and yet even more of an obstacle to delve into. I have read some truly amazing and personal pieces online today from news sources and Tumblr accounts. People sharing their experiences from that day, be it from a building down the block from the Twin Towers or across the country in Los Angeles. As a NYC resident, there are reminders every where, from the train line missing a stop, the still empty pit where two massive buildings once stood, the constant police drills, 9/11 bumper stickers, memorial tattoos and other things that seem to immortalize that day beyond just the history.

I remember waking up that day, after the towers were hit and me fearing the worst and hoping we would all find a way out of this. And while the horror of watching the events unfold over and over again on cable news was enough to give anyone some sort of stress disorder, I like to think of that day as the moment that my life took on a deeper meaning. I realized that day, after watching people fear for the lives and thousands of them losing theirs, that the time to be scared to engage in one’s life is over. I became invested in politics and aware of what was going on in my government and wanted to participate in making this place better. I like to think that 9/12 was the day that I got balls in regards to my own life and began going out there and attempting to get what I wannted. And I dont mean that in a selfish or silly way, but honestly that day opened my eyes to the fact that your life can not be planned, the future can not be told and you need to make every day count.

I wanted to discuss the brilliant article Pareene contributed over at Gawker, which called out Glenn Beck and his crew for looking upon 9/12 as some sort of joyous day, where America was harmonious. It wasn’t if you lived in NYC or if you had a family member who worked in the twin towers or the pentagon or within the military. On that day you were scared of what was to come and how you could move on and no amount of sticky American flags on the back of cars and empty promises like “These colors don’t run” could take back those events. We were united, but united due to fear. Politics still reared its ugly head, the media still covered up some things and nearly 4,000 families mourned their missing loved ones. And while I found a courage that day it wasn’t because of some false harmony pumping through NYC. It was because for the first time in my entire life this country was no longer protected, meaning neither was I. It was the day that I became an adult and had to face the harsh realities of the things that surround us in our cities, states and the world. There is nothing that can erase the memory of the feeling I had in my gut that day. And there is nothing that can erase from our collective memories, but hopefully as the years pass, and we as a nation evolve, much like I did that day, we can learn to find a peace with the evils of the world and the inadequacies of our own selves.

Summers used to be spent drunk on the streets of NYC with friends stirring up trouble. Since I am now officially old, they are spent on my couch, in A/C, watching horrific reality TV. Sad, yes, but unfortunately true. Anyways, this reality TV induced coma I battle through can explain my recent appreciation for the torturous Big Brother. I didn’t want to recap this show, because this would admit to everyone out there that I actually care what happens to the house guests, but after last night’s episode, I can not keep quiet.

Last year, I made the mistake of watching this and actually liking a few of the house guests. For all those not living on planet USA, Big Brother, originally a British creation, is a program where they throw a bunch of lost souls, who want to win money, into a “house” on a sound stage in the bowels of Burbank or Studio City somewhere and watch them as they all go mad! What always starts out as an interesting sociological experiment, turns into a backstabbing greed fest, where NO ONE is to be trusted. And somehow, after last year’s debacle of watching good person be evicted over and over again, I returned to CBS to start my misery all over again. This season started out with house guests being in “cliques”, basically creating alliances from the very beginning and admitting that this show eventually spirals into high school style antics. There were a handful of standouts to me this season, those who deserve to move through the game due to their intelligence or overall honesty. See I know this is a game, but I hate to reward assholes with $250K so I always support the honest fools, which is why I end up pissed off when the season comes to a close.

For some reason on reality shows, I tend to like people who I would avoid like the plague in real life, which is why I became enraptured in the G-rated romance of Jeff & Jordan. In my opinion, the two most attractive house guests the show has ever had and they seemed to be genuinely interested in each other for more than the “game factor”. They cuddled, learned more about each other and seemed interested in playing an honest game, which makes them aces in my book. They joined forces with Michelle and Russell a few weeks ago, when Jeff won the “Coup D’etat” power from America, after Russell was the most hated person in the house, courtesy of Chima’s rants and the other alliance, made up of Natalie, Kevin, Lydia, Chima and once upon a time Jesse. But since Jeff used his America given power to shake up the game and kick out Jesse, the power has gone to his head, leading him to make mistake after mistake. Once Chima flipped and got kicked out of the house, Jeff & Jordan for some reason gunned after Lydia, as opposed to Kevin, the actual competitor left from that alliance. They then listened to lies from Kevin and Natalie and back doored Russell, essentially cementing an exit for either Jeff or Jordan. When Jeff exclaimed over and over again that Russell got got, I had to hold back from screaming, you dummy, you got got.

These ridiculous power plays, kicking out members of your alliance, not to mention one of the most disliked house guests, which essentially guarantees you a win against him, just shows how this game can get to a person. Watching Jeff high upon the power ladder a few weeks ago and now basically digging his own tunnel to the Jury House is painful. Mainly because I thought, for once, I would have picked a winner on this show and that people don’t always allow power to corrupt them on these time of programs. Either, I didn’t realize that Jeff was this stupid, to believe members of the competing alliance, that Jeff was never that honest to begin with since he had no issue back dooring Russell or the minute I like you, you will lose on a reality competition show. With Thursday’s vote, we will see one of the strongest players in Big Brother history get the ol’ heave ho because he messed up his own game. Which is why I will try my best never to get involved in such a silly show ever again. Oh who am I kidding, when does the next season start?

Are any of you watching this show? If you are, what do you think about this season so far?

The following story is one of a personal nature to me and does not involve any funny celebrity quotes nor casting news. A few years back in my neighborhood, a woman was raped on a subway platform. While waiting for a G train, which are notoriously late and slow especially late night, the woman was raped and her screams for help were ignored by not one, but two MTA workers who could actually see the event taking place. One was a toll booth operator and another was a platform worker. The only action to protect that woman taken that night was an internal MTA alarm being sound to alert the cops, who took nearly 15 minutes to respond to the incident only FIVE BLOCKS away from the precinct. The woman’s attacker was able to get away and is still on the loose.

To this day, this subway station is not actively patrolled by cops, nor MTA workers and remains one of the unsafest in the whole system. In fact, a few friends were heading back to their Brooklyn apartments on the G around 2AM about a month after the incident and were actually yelled at by the MTA clerk in the booth to “get out of here before you all get raped”. My complaints with the MTA and my local representatives seem to not have made a difference, so maybe if some of you hear this woman’s ordeal, imagine being attacked and knowing people are there listening to your screams and doing NOTHING TO HELP, and start telling others, justice will be served. The victim is currently trying to sue the MTA for not doing their jobs that night and a judge informed her and her attorney that there is no case here. So I guess “See something, Say something”, only goes for people NOT ON THE MTA payroll. This makes me sick. Let’s make sure that some justice is served here.

So it’s been brewing for a bit, and believe me I have been fighting it with all my energy, but I think I am beginning to seriously fall for Zac Efron. Zac has seemingly been working over time to get into my good graces and after seeing the commercials for his upcoming film “17 Again”, I just know I am goner when it comes to this dude. Now this aint the some sort of dirty crush like what I have for Ryan Reynolds or Alan Rickman (Don’t Scoff!), but its more the “gosh darn it aren’t you charming” kind. Now don’t get me wrong, I will forever be bitter that this kid was cast as Link in “Hairspray”, but I think his most recent career moves are a wonderful start to a true career outside the Disney umbrella. And apparently I am not the only who thinks this way, since the actor was given the award for Breakthrough Performer at ShoWest earlier this month.

In “17 Again”, Efron stars as a younger version of Matthew Perry’s character Mike O’Donnell after something paranormal and hijinxy happens. Zac then is confronted with viewing his life through a different framework, which I can only assume means he will become closer to his children and love his wife, played by Leslie Mann, more. While the movie might not be the most original, I like how instead of being thrown into the role of one of his kids, which would have been a direct pick up from 80′s classics like “Vice Versa” or “Like Father, Like Son”, they have him just as some random teenage kid, so that you get to actually see how kids are nowadays. And from the commercials and trailers, this could easily become the next installment in my collection of perfect Saturday Afternoon comedies, much like “13 Going on 30″ and “Whatever Happens in Vegas” (don’t judge!). Also starring in the film is State alumni, Thomas Lennon, who plays Perry’s/ Efron’s best friend, which is always a comedy slam dunk in my mind. And as Efron seems to be attempting to distance himself from his Disney life, he is attempting to go the funny route. This weekend, Efron will be move up another step on the pop culture ladder when he hosts “Saturday Night Live”, with musical guests Yeah Yeah Yeahs. This coupled with the “Pool Party” video that dropped today on FunnyorDie.com marks the next step for the young Efron, the one that brings his career beyond songs and dances.

The video stars so many young Hollywooders it resembles an UsWeekly party. The scene stealers are the always funny Nicole Sullivan and Thomas Lennon, who play Efron’s embarassing Uncle Hank and girlfriend. And while its hard for anyone to hold a candle to that sort of funny, Zac does a good job as the straight man in this parody (No thats not some undercover gay joke). After all this, I’m excited to see whats the next step in Efron’s blossoming career.

So what do you think of this pool party??

If you do one thing this weekend, head to the movies to check out “Adventureland”. While some of the trailers might make you think this is going to be another raucous teen comedy, much like Greg Mottola’s previous directorial effort “Superbad”, this couldn’t be further from the truth. I was able to catch a screening of the film two weeks back and I fell in love with it. You can my full length review, here.

The film is pitch perfect in my eyes and easily comparable to teen films like “Say Anything” and “American Graffiti”. “Adventureland” had real life characters not teen caricatures, which is the major difference between it and most of other film centered around a coming of age tale. Mottola’s near autobiographical tale is filled with nostalgia, for both the wonder of being young and the pain that comes with it. With wonderful performances by Jesse Eisenberg, Martin Starr, Ryan Reynolds, Bill Hader and Kristen Stewart, the characters feel like neighbors or locals making it particularly easy to fall into the story. And the poignant soundtrack fits the films’ tone perfectly. If you are looking for a film that will make you laugh, think and reminisce, then I suggest you check out “Adventureland”.
