It was this weird interaction with an artist that I generally respect that has left a bizarre impression on me, and apparently it left something with Louis C.K. as well. Recently, I started recapping a few programs for DaemonsTV, one of them being C.K.’s new FX program, “Louie.” So this week’s episode, which dealt with the dreaded heckler, hit just a bit too close to home. While not identical to my real-life experience with Louis, it was eerily similar. And of course, our heated conversation didn’t take place till after his set, it still revolved around him considering himself a good person, thinking his pedophile jokes were okay, me being a not nice person and Todd Barry lurking the whole time.

This episode was probably a culmination of various women/hecklers Louis has had the opportunity to interact with over the years, but since I am conveniently one of those women, who happens to be blonde, bold, and drunk at the time, I can now say that I have made it. So TV writers, if you would like me to come down and yell at you for a bit so you have a plot/arc for an upcoming episode, let me know. I work freelance.

Sadly, I was right last week when I called you all out for not watching “Party Down“. STARZ has decided that its not interested in keeping their only redeemable program on the air and vetoed a third season for this near classic comedy series. Yesterday the executive veep of programming, Stephan Shelanski released a statement:
“After careful consideration, we’ve decided not to continue on with subsequent seasons of Party Down and Gravity. We’re grateful to everyone involved in the shows, and are proud to have had them on the channel. Starz remains committed to aggressively expanding our original programming lineup.”

And while this news isn’t shocking to anyone paying attention to ratings, it’s definitely sad for us programming junkies. “Party Down” was a rare gem in a very bloated television landscape and allowed a talented cast to shine each and every episode. Its truthfulness in what really happens when you try to ‘make it’ in Hollywood was a breath of fresh air compared to the escapist and vacuous programs like “Entourage” and “The Hills“. But its real strength lied in the witty writing, the chemistry between the cast and the ability to execute smart physical comedy. As we now know, its not necessarily the best TV programs to rise in the ratings and it doesn’t help when you are on a network that’s broadcast into like all of 12 homes. And while some of “Party Down” alum have already made their move, like Jane Lynch with “Glee” and Adam Scott on “Parks and Recreation“, I hope that the rest of the talented cast find its foot somewhere else in the TV landscape. It’s just a shame that another quality program bites the dust when there is so much garbage still on TV. Well at least Rob Thomas can start working on that ‘Veronica Mars‘ movie now, right?

So I beg you Network Executives, please please please give quality a chance. Look at “Mad Men” or “Southland” – these are shows that were either passed on or cancelled by major networks and have found their footing on other channels. It can happen and with “Party Down” the cast can rotate without effecting the overall structure, so even if some of the stars are getting deals of networks like NBC, they can still bang out a few episodes for a third season. And if no one will take a chance on this, please acknowledge that we have lost another classic series due to poor programming and ratings issues – not lack of quality. RIP “Party Down“. I’ll pour myself a glass of wine and get a bowl of soup in your honor tonight.

Joan Rivers, the brash, witty and hysterical comedian is the focus of a behind-the-scenes documentary that has been receiving rave reviews on the festival circuit. “Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work“, which was directed Ricki Stern and Annie Sundberg, delves into a year in the life of Rivers, where we get to see the comedian open up for the camera both behind the scenes and on stage. The 76-year-old working comedian, who helped pave the way for the likes of Kathy Griffin, Sarah Silverman and Chelsea Handler, openly discusses the highs and lows in both her career and her personal life in the film produced by IFC and Break Thru.

Rivers has made a career for more than forty years out of poking fun at herself, her looks and at others, specifically celebrities. In the 1980s, she was quite vocal about her various plastic surgery operations, which made her an easy target for jokes and backlash. Since then she has had the honor of being the first and only female to guest-host “The Tonight Show“ until she “broke up” with her comedy mentor Johnny Carson when she got her own late night TV program on Fox. The show quickly failed, her relationship with Carson was through, and she was stuck picking up the pieces once again when her and her husband were fired by Fox. Apparently, this was too much for her husband, as he committed suicide a few months later. Throughout this adversity, Rivers continued to work and work and make herself a household name. Stern and Sundberg when first approaching this project wanted to go beyond the hype on Rivers’ public persona and get into what it takes for a 76-year-old comedian to thrive for “A Piece of Work“.

The directors and producers followed her for a year in her life, right after her appearance on “Celebrity Apprentice,” which she eventually won, and she was faced with a great deal of backlash after “protecting” her daughter Melissa on the program and speaking her mind, most of the time at the expense of her fellow contestants. The film, which has been getting rave reviews at festival appearances, seems to delve far beyond Rivers’ stage persona and show that she is in fact an actual person. We watch as Rivers stares at an empty calendar discussing how the ladies she helped create have taken away her club dates, and what she needs to do to get back on top. We also get to see a day in the life of a successful comedian who, no matter what she says about herself, has built a career on making others laugh at her own insecurities. As a fan of her comedy, it’s impressive to see such a deep portrait of the woman and the comedian, who at one point was a living embodiment of her own caricature. Rivers prides herself on having a successful career and being a mother, and paving the way for women to succeed more easily in a one-time male-only industry.

Never one to shy away or back down from a fight, Rivers is constantly called out on her “goes there” behavior and says, “there is always an adjective in front of my name and it’s never a nice one”. As a child, I remember explicitly falling in love with Rivers when I first saw her in “The Muppets Take Manhattan” in which she played an over the top makeup counter clerk, along with Miss Piggy. After following her career for years, I have always appreciated her dedication to the joke, her ability to make lemonade out of lemons and still be the overbearing mom we all know she is. Whether it be antagonizing celebrities on the red carpets or protecting her daughter to Howard Stern, Rivers knows what it takes to make us laugh. And at this point, she is very much in on the joke. I can not wait to check out “Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work,” which I sadly missed at Tribeca last month, when it hits theaters on June 11th. In the meantime, check out the new trailer for the doc and a clip, provided by Break Thru Films. And don’t miss your opportunity to see a screening of the film when it comes around. You can check out the full list of dates here.

What do you think of Joan Rivers and her brand of comedy? Will you be checking out the film this Summer?

If you were anything like half of the folks on the internet then you were looking forward to Betty White hosting the Mother’s Day episode of ‘Saturday Night Live‘. The sexy senior, who has FINALLY been getting the respect she so surely deserves, brought it this Saturday. Originally when Lorne Michaels and Co. caved into the interweb demands from the public and gave White a chance to host ‘SNL’, it turned out she wouldn’t be alone. Perhaps to avoid tiring the 88-year-old comedian with a hosting responsibility, a slew of former SNLers came back with a fully focused ladies night over at 30 Rock. Rachel Dratch, Ana Gasteyer, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Maya Rudolph and Molly Shannon came back to the place they once called home to participate in the special SNL, alongside comedy legend White. But if you were paying attention Saturday, and it seemed that everyone tuned in, it was proven that age ain’t nuthin but a number and White could hold her own until 1AM. White was the focus of almost all the skits this weekend and I can’t think of one that didn’t score big in the laughter category. Personally, I can’t remember laughing that hard for an hour and half straight in a very long time. And apparently I wasn’t the only one since the May 8th episode of SNL scored its highest ratings in a year and a half, making it fall just short of the historic pre-’08 election episode.

See SNL – all you need is Betty White and a few of your former cast members to bring the funny and the ratings. While there wasn’t a bum skit in the bunch, I can’t possibly post every video from that night. So here are my top 5, in no particular order, as well as the funny skits that were actually cut in dress rehearsal.

Betty White’s monologue, which I believe generally sets the tone for the overall show, was spot on incorporating her ability to be witty and sexy, while poking fun.

Betty White brought her special batch of muffins to the always classic and subversive ‘Delicious Dish’ sketch with Ana Gasteyer and Molly Shannon. Attempt to not do a spit take when Betty exclaims, “My muffin has had a cherry since 1939″. Priceless.

This ‘Census’ sketch was the last of the night and even it was on point. Tina Fey penned the original back when Christopher Walken hosted the last time the census was on the radar, but this was priceless.

‘Scared Straight’ was amazing last night. “WIZZZZARRRD OF ASSSS!” is all I need to say.

The infamous ‘Debbie Downer’ sketches are some of the best in SNL history, but sadly (or not) last night’s ep was so jam packed this was killed in dress rehearsal. But thanks to NBC understanding our sheer need for more SNL, they released all the quality bits that were killed. Here we get to see Debbie ruining a ladies night all about lingerie, wine and oil spills.

And lastly, ‘Bronx Beat’ is always a favorite with Maya Rudolph and Amy Poehler, so I was a bit bummed when it didn’t air. This will forever be one of my favorites and thanks to overwhelming demand the sketch has hit the internet and reminded me of what SNL used to be like. Let’s learn about what Yoga stands for.
If you missed anything from this weekend’s episode, its available for viewing online over at NBC. Also, check out Jay-Z’s two performances and the rest of the sketches that ended up on the cutting room floor. What did you think of Betty? Who would you like to see host?

One word comes to mind when I think of Conan O’Brien after the late night debacle and that’s classy. While the one-time employee of NBC had to sign a non-defamatory agreement when he left NBC this year, I would assume his discussion about his previous employers and Jay Leno would remain respectful even if he hadn’t. O’Brien sat down with Steve Kroft for an exclusive ‘exit interview’ for “60 Minutes“, which aired this past Sunday just a day after the contractual TV gag order put on O’Brien by NBC had come to an end. The interview delved into the debacle once again, as Conan had never officially been able to discuss the split until now. O’Brien, who has embarked on a world wide tour since April, spoke about his need to perform again bringing him back to life and excitement about coming to cable next fall, when his other embargo from TV ends. Kroft went behind the scenes of the tour, seeing that O’Brien is definitely shining in the live performance spotlight, something Im assuming a TV show host of 15+ years would be very comfortable with.

And while Conan definitely kept his head up discussing the abrupt and shocking turn of events he went through with NBC reneging on their contract and deal with him, siding with Leno and his more expensive contract and doing it all without thinking of the folks involved, it was painful to know that he was still not sure why he was given the pink slip. When Kroft asked about his contact with both Leno and Jeff Zucker, head of NBC, he mentioned that neither of the “gentleman” had reached out to him, which is surprising since Zucker and O’Brien have been friends since their days at Harvard and Leno continuously believes he was just as screwed as O’Brien in this deal. He did lambast Zucker’s claims that NBC was losing money with his version of “The Tonight Show” and discussed how the show never had a chance to grow thanks to the lack of support from the network and lead-ins. And he did avoid the obvious snide jokes that could have been dealt to both men by just poking fun at Leno once by asking how he “was screwed again”? With his classic mix of Catholic neurosis and awkward timing, O’Brien exclaimed that he was fine and believed that this all “happened for a reason”. And from the looks of it, he’s right. CBS was first last night in the ratings, with “60 Minutes” pulling in 14.1MM viewers, about 4MM more than its average Sunday viewership. And his national tour is selling out in each city, so one can assume there are still many of us are on Team Coco. Now if his return to TV next Fall is successful, it could change the model of late night for TV all together. And if not, Im assuming Leno will be in the shadows cackling away. Either way, its refreshing to see someone involved within industry be thoughtful, introspective and self-aware that while losing one’s job is never easy, he is no way suffering right now. Conan O’Brien will most definitely survive.

Woohoo! It only took 500k fans on Facebook and massive media coverage to make Lorne Michaels and the folks at SNL approach Betty White to host the show in April. According to Michael Ausiello at EW that there is a deal in the works to get Betty White to host the late night program. But, she won’t be doing it alone. It’s being looked at as a “Women in Comedy” program, and they are looking to book ex-SNLers Molly Shannon, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler to come on board and celebrate being funny and having boobs (No one tell Christopher Hitchens, okay?) The execs behind the scenes proposed this show so they can book Betty, capitalize on the media stirred up over this and get their power players to come back and make sure an 88-year old comedienne wouldn’t have to carry the whole program. Personally, I have no issue with this as long as it gets Betty on the program and there is at least one Match Game ’77 sketch. Which reminds that I think it would be nice to drag back Sarah Silverman, Rachel Dratch, Maya Rudolph and possibly Jan Hooks into the fold. Hell, April could be the “Women in Comedy” month and you can have all your best ex-SNLers come back to host. I like the idea overall, because SNL is at its best when it has a proven and top notch host. Oh and please make Bobby Moynihan Sophia Petrillo in the inevitable “Golden Girls” sketch.

When Saturday Night Live is on, its on and the past two weeks have been pretty darn near classic episodes. Last week Jon Hamm visited and helped make one of the funniest episodes in years, with his skit as newly inaugurated Massachusetts Senator Scott Brown and in a perfect Digital Short with him as a sexy sax man. And this weekend’s host Ashton Kutcher continued his streak, this would be his fourth, of quality episodes. Kutcher excels in this format, but I knew they would take advantage of having Dave Grohl in the house since his new super group Them Crooked Vultures were the musical guest. And what they came up with is a thing of beauty. As a former hardcore kid, I can only imagine the following skit happening in real life and very soon to one of my friends. Enjoy the Band Reunion.
Sadly, tonight marked Conan O’Brien’s last night behind the desk of “The Tonight Show” and I’m not going to lie, I got teary eyed. After all the nonsense and all the snark going around the past couple of weeks regarding NBC’s Late Night Wars 2.0, there is something to be said about the goodbye O’Brien gave to his fans tonight. As a fan of Conans for years, it was incredibly touching to see how important the show, his staff and his fans are to him. To watch someone have to say goodbye to something that they had worked hard for years for and seemed to love every moment of was painful. Quite honestly, I will not be able to say it as eloquent as O’Brien said it himself, so here he is thanking everyone, including NBC, for their time and support over the years.

Conan was feted by some of the biggest stars in the business, who came to support the man and say thanks to what he did. O’Brien in between big name guests like Tom Hanks, who created the Coco moniker, Steve Carrell and Neil Young, wanted to make sure that his fans, especially the youth who created this movement in support of him, knew that thinking big and being positive would not let you down in the end. O’Brien said, “To all the people watching, I can never thank you enough for your kindness to me and I’ll think about it for the rest of my life. All I ask of you is one thing: please don’t be cynical. I hate cynicism- it’s my least favorite quality and it doesn’t lead anywhere.”

He rounded out his last night as host with a rocking version of “Free Bird” performed by Will Ferrell, his wife Dawn, Beck, Billy Gibbons, Ben Harper and his band. O’Brien joined in on the fun, grabbed a guitar, which presumably was from his massive personal collection, and wailed away. Oddly enough, this song became one of my favorites courtesy of the soundtrack for a little movie Tom Hanks was in himself. You might have heard of it, Forrest Gump? Check out O’Brien and his band of merry rocker.

For me, the program was emotional on various levels. O’Brien was the first last night talk show host I grew up with. By the time I was old enough to get it, Leno had already taken the throne from Johnny Carson after his first vicious battle for the spot with Dave Letterman. And Letterman, while funny, was too old for me to get. O’Brien was quirky, awkward, smart and more than anything into “my” pop culture. He opened my eyes to a different level of humor, alongside “The State” and “Kids in the Hall”. He was the antithesis of standard late night programming. And something that has yet to be noted in the nearly thousand pieces that have pontificated over this late night debacle is the amount of exposure his program brought to not yet big names in music and comedy. When Neil Young ended his beautiful performance tonight, and we found out he was more of a Conan supporter than to be expected, he thanked O’Brien for what he has done for “new music”. And it’s true, what Johnny Carson was to comedians in the lates 70′s and 1980′s, Conan was to indie rock bands in the 90′s and early ’00s. He was the only place I would ever see some of my favorite bands get any coverage outside of MTV and knowing what occurred behind the scenes, he had his hand in picking out the majority of the musical quests. He got “us”. We weren’t just an audience to him, we were his people and he ours. Micheal Ian Black explained it best why this whole mess has seemed to really effect my generation. If someone like O’Brien can get screwed by a big corporation, what’s to keep us safe? It was almost a slap in the face to anyone who doesn’t like the average comedian, the anti-Dane Cook in us all. For all us kids, who grew up on bizarre tripped out cartoons, after school specials and found humor in Ween songs, its a real dose of reality that in fact we can not have it all. So from the bottom of my heart and from one pale, red-headed Irish kid to the next, I want to thank you Conan O’Brien. I want to thank you for entertaining us for years, opening my eyes to comedy and music I had no idea existed, backing your staff in your original move to LA and in your contract negotiations and for most importantly, keeping it classy. I know you are going to go on a much deserved and well, legally mandated vacation, but I want to let you know you have a supporter in me for life and I will be waiting with a cowbell for September 1st to come, if only for the better weather. You go Coco. You go.
