Ugh! Why is Hollywood continuously trying to kill my childhood? One of the most perfect comedies, Overboard, which is like crack when you tune into on a Saturday afternoon, is in the works to be remade!!! And with Jennifer Lopez in the starring role!

In the original, Goldie Hawn flawlessly plays socialite Joanna Stayton, who falls overboard from her yacht outside a Podunk town, develops amnesia and is left at a hillbilly hospital by her husband Grant. Dean Proctor (Kurt Russell) a local contractor originally hired to revamp Stayton’s closet on the yacht and who is not compensated for his work, sees Joanna on the TV and decides to seek revenge on the rich chick and convince her she is wife and mother of his four unruly kids. Hilarity ensues, everyone learns a lesson, Dean builds a mini-golf course and an adorable kid goes “Bah bah bah bah”.

Its quite near perfect, but Jenny from the Block and Will Smith think they should go twinkering around with classic comedies, so here we are. And no worries, Smith won’t be building any closets (ha ha) in the flick since he will be producing the film with his partner at Overbrook, James Lassiter. Adam Cooper, Bill Collage and Leslie Dixon wrote the current script, but no word yet if it sticks close to the original. Not sure how you will pull this kind of thing off with all of today’s technology and Im hoping this has nothing to do with the Bronx, but you never know. Check out the original trailer below and avoid this remake with every being in your body.

So word on the street is Aziz Ansari’s ridiculous character in Funny People Raaaaaaaandy could possibly get some more time on the big screen. Like a whole two hours more and I am in love with the idea. For about a month, we have been getting snippets of the ridiculous comic and his brand of comedy on FunnyorDie.com in preparation for Friday’s release of Funny People. While this began as supplemental material to flesh out a very minor character in the movie, it has turned into Raaaaaaaandy love all over the interweb and Apatow is looking to develop these small “documentaries” into a full length.

Apatow told JoBlo.com, “Randy isn’t in the movie anywhere near as much we wish he was. Something hilariously magical happened when Aziz showed up. So we all said, ‘What else can we do?’ Let’s just make a documentary! We just couldn’t stop writing for him. And now we’re talking about making the RANDY movie. We can’t get enough of Randy…”

What’s funny here is that really the Raaaaaaaandy character let’s all of those freshly successful comedians to poke fun of asshats like Dane Cook, who are notorious for their frat style of humor and love of stealing or “upgrading” other comedians jokes, without fully calling them out. Here’s to see more of both Raaaaaaaandy and Aziz Ansari on the big screen. Its about time Ansari got the love from the mainstream him and his wit so fully deserves. This is why I love Apatow, he sees a good thing and promotes the shit out of it. Now, if he would just start doing that for a few chick comedians, we will be all good.

Check out the third installment of the “documentary” series.

Last week, Page Six published one of their infamous blind items in the “Just Asking” column about a successful actor who will be taking time off from movie making to get a handle on his habits as opposed to working on his marriage, as he is reporting.
The Blind Item was….WHICH actor is on hiatus due to a drug relapse? He claimed he needed time off because of the heartbreak of his public split, but he’s actually headed to rehab.

From the chatter on the web and rumors in Hollywood, it seemed that the only likely actor to fit the bill was Sean Penn, who had been separated from his wife, Robin Wright Penn at the time. He was also fodder for the tabloids and gossip sites with his late night paling around with young actresses and bizarre behavior at clubs. And yesterday, EW.com reported that Penn has pulled out of the upcoming drama “Cartel”. Its also been reported that Penn will most likely drop out of the biopic of “The Three Stooges”, which was set for an August production start date. And on top of that we are hearing a slew of “sources close to Penn” being quoted throughout the blogosphere that the actor is really trying hard to work out things with his wife. For a man who usually has a distaste for the media, specifically that celebrating celebrity, its weird that we would all of a sudden hear so much about the struggle of his marriage. Either way, I do hope that if Penn is taking time off for personal reasons, be it the mending of his marriage or taking care of an addiction, he finds himself healthy, happy and back in the game in no time. I’m also pleased that he will be stepping away from “The Three Stooges” film, which I can only see as a whole lot of mess down the line.

What do you think?

As a child, there were few movies I loved more than “Footloose”. In fact, I made my mother bring me to see it multiple times in the theater just so I could dance in the aisles and its soundtrack will be one of my favorite albums ever. And as I grew up and could actually understand the plot line, I appreciated the movie even more. It went above and beyond the typical teen rebellion flicks from the 1980′s and hit upon an issue which could hit home for so many people out there. So it pains me to know Hollywood will be remaking another one of my favorite flicks. Originally, Zac Efron, my tween crush, was supposed to take the reins from Kevin Bacon and play the bad boy rebel Ren McCormack who brings mayhem to his new quiet and holier than thou town. Sadly, Efron pulled out to avoid his being typecast as the musical actor and they had to begin the search once again. I personally liked their next choice to lead the movie, but this got the kibosh too.

Unfortunately, the execs seemed to
think Chase Crawford could fill Bacon’s shoes on this, giving him the lead role. Efron I could see in this role because he has a certain charm to him and he can dance, but Crawford is just a wet blanket and has zero personality. And since the director Kenny Ortega, who directed the “High School Musical” franchise, has turned this remake into a full blown musical, Crawford better have an amazing voice to carry his character. This will most likely be a disaster with him in the lead role, but as long they cast the part of Ariel a bit better, it might not be “Justin and Kelly” bad. Miley Cyrus, Julianne Hough and Hayden Panettierre are all in talks to fill in Lori Singer’s role as Ariel Moore, the daughter of the bible thumping preacher who removes dancing, singing and music from the small town. I think Hough is quite a natural fit there, since she is a supreme dancer and a wonderful singer, but I am afraid if she is cast this will turn into a countrified version of the original, with Rascal Flats covering classic Kenny Loggins songs, like “I’m Free”, which will make me very angry. And while the theme of the movie, teenage rebellion, religious overlords and dance fever is actually pretty timely to America, I still don’t want anyone messing with this soundtrack. So let’s watch the video now and hope the execs over at Paramount Pictures really don’t screw this one up to much.

I would like to christen this segment as Things You Might Have Missed…while you were getting your car stolen. This post is in honor of my missing car. Anyways, there is a whole lot of stuff I was unable to get to this weekend, so here’s a little round up.

* The cast of “Seinfeld” are reuniting for a multiple episode arc on the seventh season of “Curb Your Enthusiasm”. This will be the first time all four cast members and Larry David will be reunited on screen since “Seinfeld” ended its run nearly ten years ago. As a fan of both of these shows, I can not wait for this season.

* Speaking of Larry David, the Tribeca Film Festival has announced its full lineup for this years’ festivities. As Spielster reported last week, “Whatever Works” the latest film by Woody Allen starring Larry David, will open the ceremonies on April 22nd.

* We found out that most of the women competing for the affections of Mr. Bret Michaels on this season of “Rock of Love Bus”are mothers! This fact actually hurst my brain.

* Here is the awesome trailer for the upcoming “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. As we learned last year, Warner Brothers moved the film’s release to this summer to bring up their earnings after last years’ banner figures with “The Dark Knight”. For Potter fans, its been way too long to see what the gang has been up to at Hogwarts

* Is there really a sequel to “Zoolander” in the works? Apparently, yes there is, with Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson reprising their roles! The film is set to follow the dueling cum bestie male models in a new and most likely hilarious adventure.

* Tom Morrello and his new band, Street Sweeper, will be opening up for the Nine Inch Nails/ Jane’s Addiction tour this summer. Its also rumored that this tour will find its way to Lollapalooza, along with the Beastie Boys and Depeche Mode. Honestly, the 14 year old girl in me continues to scream with glee over all of this reunion and Jane’s Addiction tour fun.

* And finally, “Watchmen” came in number one at the box office this weekend, with a total of $55 Million. This makes it the sixth highest opening weekend gross for an R-rated film.

I will be posting my review of the film, as well as some other goodies, when I get my head straightened from this weekend’s events and those dang changes in the clocks. ENJOY!

Sometimes being a fan really pays off, like in the case of Kevin Smith. Rumors were confirmed today when it was announced that Smith will be directing Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan in a buddy cop comedy “A Couple of Cops”. In fact, Smith himself twittered last night about how nervous he was. Not only will this be the first major studio gig for Smith, but it will also be the first directing job of a film not written by him.

For fans of Kevin’s, this is a wonderful pay off for Smith. In his last Q&A special, “Sold Out: A Threevening with Kevin Smith”, Smith discussed in full detail his experience with action star Bruce Willis, while working together on ”Live Free or Die Hard”. Smith was brought on as a writer for the film and it ended up turning into an on-screen part. Smith and Willis worked together over the course of a few days and discussed the idea of working together on a project in the future. I know that Smith had actually attempted to write something specifically for Willis, but the pressure got to him, so this is pretty exciting for the New Jersey native to work with his NJ brother.

“A Couple of Cops”, originally “A Couple of Dicks” when it was over at Gold Circle and had Robin Williams and James Gandolfini attached to it, is about two cops who try to track down a stolen baseball card and the hijinx and action that ensues. It seems like a throwback to the late 80’s style of buddy cop flicks, like “Tango and Cash” and “Leathal Weapon”, which I am really excited about. I have no issue with funny and not overly complicated comedies taking over the box office once again.

Smith was originally set to finish up his much talked about horror film “Red State”, which focuses on political and cultural issues in the way only a Smith film can. Obviously this has to be put on the back burner now so Smith can step into the shoes of a big Hollywood director. I say congrats to Smith since I personally believe his strong suit lies directing the film and not writing it.

My prediction that “Whatever Works” would premiere at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival was quite accurate. It was announced today <a href=” http://www.cinematical.com/2009/03/02/woody-allens-new-film-to-open-2009-tribeca-fest/“>that Woody Allen’s latest film would premiere at the TFF’s opening night on April 22nd. It’s quite fitting that Allen’s return to New York on screen would be the same year he premiered a film at Tribeca Film Festival.

The details of the movie are sparse other than it will be a darker version of typical Woody. The film stars Larry David as the typical curmudgeon character, as well as Evan Rachel Wood, Ed Begley Jr. and Patricia Clarkson. Jane Rosenthal, the co-founder of the festival said “I fell in love with New York through Woody Allen’s movies and I am excited we are opening this year’s Festival”, with “Whatever Works”. The festival has been tweaking their format recently in order to compete for bragging rights with Sundance as a powerhouse within the independent and cinematic community. The full schedule for the festival has not yet been released yet and I will be covering the festival as events and schedules develop. I am excited about the partnership between Allen and the TFF. The pairing of the quintessential New Yorker with the ever expanding film festival is genius. I cannot wait to see this movie and think Larry David and Woody Allen together is what neurotic Jewish dreams are made of. Sony Pictures Classics has already picked up the film and it will be released nationwide on June 19th.

Another musical gets the big screen treatment. On the heels of major success for both “Hairspray” and “Mamma Mia!”, New Line Cinema has announced that they will be producing another film version of the classic musical “Damn Yankees”. Jim Carrey and Jake Gyllenhaal have signed on to star in the remake and has both actors performing in their first big screen musical. Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, the producers of “Hairspray”, will be behind the scenes once again for New Line.

This will be the second time “Yankees” will receive the big screen treatment. “Damn Yankees” originally debuted on Broadway in 1955 was choreographed by the wonderful Bob Fosse and received seven Tony Awards. It was made into a film in 1958, and starring Ray Walston, Tab Hunter and Gwen Verdon (Fosse’s muse at one point.) This adaptation of the play is expected to be a modernization of the original, which was set in the 1950’s. Gyllenhaal will be playing the role of Joe Boyd, a fanatic baseball team fan who makes a deal with the devil so his team can get it together and go to the World Series. The devil, naturally, will be played by Carrey. No word yet who will step into the role of Lola, the lost soul used by the devil to make sure Boyd signs over his soul.
