Lets start at the beginning….

This weekend I managed to find myself on the island of no channel 7, aka ABC. Yes, you heard correctly. Thanks to an horrific who-has-the-bigger-balls and wants-to-make-more-money-while-laying-off-thousands battle between Cablevision (the local network here) and ABC/Disney kept me from watching the Oscars in the comfort of my in-laws home, so I ventured out to a sports bar (the only one in the neighborhood with satellite) with my mom-in-law to be. WE had to listen to BONGOS during the red carpet folks. BONGOS!!!! Cause as long as I have been alive and realized I love things, I have NEVER missed an OSCARS. NEVER. So, I found myself in a Long Island bar, that was actually chock full of lovely people who tried and tried to hook up the closed captioning so we could hear the witty banter between Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin, but unfortunately, no dice. And then the Jack Johnson heavens opened up and ABC stopped sucking dick and we got to watch the Oscars on CABLE! With Chinese food and Pinot Grigio like respectable humans.

So let’s go from there. Christoph Waltz, as I had predicted in a lonely theater 8 months ago while my car got an oil change, won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. And boy did he deserve it. I never fell in love with a Nazi as hard as I did with Christoph. We have a BINGO with that dude. And then there were a handful of awards that meant so much to many, but not me. And then we had to sit and watch the C team of the Alvin Alley company dance to nominated scores. And THEN FISHER STEVENS WON AN OSCAR. I repeat FISHER. STEVENS. WON. AN.OSCAR.

Ok, so you are paying attention now. Cause, I mean the rank dude from HACKERS won an Oscar folks. That can’t be undone. So then we raised hands with Mo’Nique, cause she won Best Supporting and doesn’t shave her legs and makes sexual and physical abuse look real. And then things got interesting…. well actually the Screenplay awards were given out before FISHER STEVENS WON and for Adapted Precious killed it and for Original The Hurt Locker confirmed its assault on Cameron’s career and genitals. Woohah (as blind Pacino would say). Ok so back to the awards we cared about. Best actor went to my first crush, Jeff Bridges, who repeated the same speech Ive heard since the Golden Globes, but still thanked his wife and kids and stand-in. LOVE IT. Also, he’s been doing various The Big Lebowski quotes and I will heart that forever.

Sandra Bullock won Best Actress for The Blind Side. I aint seen it, and I probably wont, but I am OK with her getting an award because she is pretty rad. She also looked beyond beautiful tonight, which cemented her win. Her mom was an opera singer in Germany and she had gum on her seat while Dennis Hopper was trying to blow her and the coach of Sparkle Motion up! Bullock deserved it as much, if more, as squinty eyed Zelleweger, frozen-face Kidman and hotties Berry & Theron – SO LETS MOVE ON.
And then the big one came. Since Barbra Streisand came out to deliver the Oscar for Best Director, I knew this was going to Kathryn Bigelow. ON A SERIOUS NOTE. I cried. I cried in a room with my mom and soon to be mom-in-law and felt what i feels like to wait for fucking evah for an award. Bigelow has been able to do what both men and women havent before her, deliver an action move with heart. And she has succeeded with it. She deserved it. And please don’t forget it.
Her acceptance speech thanked the powers that be that made the movie happen, as well as the troops that give up their lives and safety for us every day. So it was fitting that Tom Hanks ran up on stage and gave the award for Best Picture to The Hurt Locker. For its story, drama and feel, this move deserved to win. And I cant think of a better way to ringing in a monumental moment like this, with anyone else in the room.

More on the dresses, awards and whats to come tomorrow, but until then, thanks to Barbra, Bigelow, McDaniel and the rest of you amazing women, who have given me even a morsel of thinking this industry could welcome us with open arms. You made dreams official tonight. There are girls who will not question their motives, their love of cinema and will continue to provide America and the world with entertainment and dreams and comedy and fantasy and horror and anything that will make you forget your real life for 2 and a half hours.

Here’s the full list of the winners and we’ll check in with you tomorrow when the Pinot has wore off. I will get to the John Hughes/comedy respective tomorrow too. This needs my full non-snark attention.

If you are a follower of Jason Reitman on Twitter, you will know how much time he has put into completing his latest effort Up in the Air. Based loosely on the Walter Kirn novel of the same name,Up in the Air follows the life and beliefs of Ryan Bingham, played by George Clooney, a downsizing specialist, who prefers to live life on the road, alone and with no personal attachments. Of course, life can’t always be as simple as you would prefer it and we watch as relationships form around him, as well as with him and what those changes mean to his life.

Reitman surprised attendees at the Telluride Film Festival with a preview of the film this past weekend. Telluride is a special place to Reitman because this is also where he previewed the critically acclaimed Juno, which began the Oscar buzz before the little movie was even released. The movie will also be part of the stellar lineup for the Toronto International Film Festival, which begins tomorrow and runs through the 19th. So to increase the already heightened buzz for this film, Paramount Pictures has released an exclusive teaser trailer to /Film.com. The film has been receiving rave reviews, even in its early stages and the Oscar buzz for Clooney and Reitman has already begun. And from the teaser trailer alone, I can understand how people are easily falling in love with this film.

So they came and they went, but the Oscars were surprisingly entertaining. I know I promised some liveblogging, but unfortunately, my party got off to a late start and I was fearful of just turning my computer on and finding out Cruz had won.

Hugh Jackman excelled as the host, with his song and dance routines, and his ability to find the humor in the performances. The presenters were quite good last night and I actually didn’t mind the theater in the round, previous winners giving the award to this year’s winners. I really enjoyed Jennifer Aniston and Jack Black’s presentation for Animation films and Natalie Portman telling Ben Stiller, while he was mocking Joaquin Phoenix, that he looks like he works in a “Hasidic Meth Lab” (which is the term that might take over for MC Bed Bugs). All in all, it was a bit too long, but much more entertaining than in years past. I prefer the skilled entertainer as a host, no offense Mr. Jon Stewart. So let’s get to the winners….

There were nearly no surprises this year in the best picture and actors categories, except for the possible toss up between Mickey Rourke and Sean Penn for Best Actor. Penn walked away with that prize and accepted the award with a candor that is not normally present. The actor started off his speech with “You Commie, homo-loving sons-of-a-gun” which meant Penn was enjoying himself and sort of shocked. He went on to thank the community and the academy explaining that he is aware how hard he makes it to like him sometimes. And he thanked Mickey Rourke for his bang up job in “The Wrestler”. Other winners were Kate Winslet for her performance in “The Reader”, Penelope Cruz for her work in “Vicky Christina Barcelona” and a posthumous award went to Heath Ledger for his portrayal of the Joker in “The Dark Knight”.
Slumdog Millionaire cleaned up like expected, with 8 of 10 awards they were nominated for, including Best Director to Danny Boyle and Best Picture. Boyle’s speech was touching and humble and made me very excited that he took home the top prize. To see the entire cast on the stage accepting the award was quite magical and it was nice to see Hollywood opening their arms to a small movie made about a far off place. Apparently, backstage in the winner’s tent was interesting with Cruz still frazzled that she had won, Winslet continuing to have to answer for silly statements said an interview two months ago and Penn refusing to acknowledge the hateful protesters outside the theater carrying anti-gay signs. Oh and by the way, Jennifer Aniston and Angelina Jolie did not pull each other’s hair or attempt to claw at each other, so don’t worry.

All in all, it was a success. Yes there were fewer big names in attendance and not everyone stopped on the red carpet for pictures, but I think this was a much more entertaining show than in years past. My other two favorite moments was Shirley Maclaine speaking to Anne Hathaway during the Best Actress nomination (I got teared up when Anne told her she “loved her!”) and the Judd Apatow produced skit starring James Franco, who should have been nominated and Seth Rogen, who looked unbelievable svelt. Oh and Sophia Loren and her Peaches N’ Cream Barbie dress almost made me pee my pants! Ahh so let’s look forward to the race of 2009, since I am sure it’s already started! Here is the full list of winners for the 81st Academy Awards. What did you think of the awards?

Oh man, so as always, yesterday’s IFC/FIlm Independent Spirit Awards were hilarious. Steve Coogan brought it as the host with his raunchy humor and the winners were actually appreciative of getting their awards. Personally, this shit always looked alot more fun to be a part of than the Oscars, since you don’t need to be in makeup for ten hours beforehand.

But the highlight of the show was Mickey Rourke’s acceptance speech. The comeback kid won for his portrayal of a down on his luck wrestler in “The Wrestler” and boy did he give the audience something to talk about. This year truly has been Mickey’s and he didnt want to leave anyone out of it, even if he forgot their name. But amazingly he started the speech by begging directors to give Eric Roberts another chance and forgive him for his previous sins, which made me wonder – what did Roberts do to get saddled with supporting roles in B movies? After Rourke waxed nostalgic and Roberts begged him to move on, he thanked as many people as he could remember, said Marissa Tomei’s name was Melissa at first and said fuck about 25 times. Watch this speech in all its glory and revel in it since this sort of honesty, unless Rourke wins tonight, will be nowhere at The Oscars, which I am live blogging and twittering tonight.

Ahh…its that time of year again. I can feel it in the air. Binging, purging, spray tans, tequila and the slightest hint of phoniness must mean that this weekend is the big day in Los Angeles. Yep that’s right it’s Oscar time. I felt stiffed with the Best Picture category nominees, so its a bit hard to get jazzed up about it all. But that doesn’t mean I will not be celebrating with a little get together and live blogging/twittering the event.

I meant to discuss my picks for the winners a while back with the few big categories, but I have been completely side tracked and can’t believe this weekend is upon us already. Its almost pointless at this time to discuss proposed winners because nearly every category is sewn up. But for the big ones, I wanted to chat a bit about who I THINK should win.

Let’s get to the big one right away –
Best Picture:
Please don’t tomatoes at your screen when I say this, but I really don’t think Slumdog Millionaire deserves to win Best Picture. Don’t get me wrong, I really really liked the movie and wouldn’t mind seeing it again. The story was clever, the characters were touching and the film showed me a life I wasn’t familiar with. I think overall though, there were a few spots within the movie that fell flat, didn’t flow and I think the performances were a bit lacking. I know that these actors are all young and new to this, but I didn’t get a lot of the depth, specifically when they were older. The cinematography and editing was great and the story was refreshingly new with a wonderful destiny/hope ideal running it through it, but for me a movie to win the big one it needs to be special. It needs to have perfect performances and story that will resonate for years.
My personal fave this year was Wall-E and Doubt. I know there was no way in hell Wall-E would get a nod in that category, but I was incredibly surprised with the lack of Doubt in this category. This was a delicate adaptation of an award winning play and it made me feel. The performances across the board were shockingly good, with Viola Davis’ small amount of screen time made me breakdown within three minutes. The movie, which focused on a Catholic Church in NYC back in the 1960′s, brought forth the conversation of racism, sexism, pedophilia and fear, just to name a few. It was able to bridge its story to many facets and I believe it deserved a Best Picture nomination.

Best Actress:
This is very heavy group of women. First, we have Meryl Streep, for her role as Sister Aloysius in “Doubt”. The best actress award has been won by Streep more than a few times and her performance was breath taking, but I don’t believe it was the best. Second, we have Kate Winslet, who is always a bridesmaid, never a bride when it comes to the dang Oscars. This year, if previous awards are true indicators, that she will get her golden man. Winslet has delivered, time and time again, pitch perfect performances and has continuously lost out in this category. She is definitely due, but unfortunately I think this will be robbing the person who should be receiving the award – Anne Hathaway. Hathaway gives a shocking performance in “Rachel Getting Married”. The actress, who plays the black sheep, drug addict within a broken artist family, and she is magnificent. Her pain is palatable, her awkwardness makes you cringe. Its like “Curb Your Enthusiasm” meets suicide. Anne went above and beyond the typical next role with this indie and I can only hope the IFC Spirit Awards(more on those in a bit) will appreciate her departure and strength in this role.

Best Supporting Actor:
Heath Ledger will walk away with this, if only for the Academy to support what could have been one of the greatest actors of all time with an award. Josh Brolin though will be due for this within the next two years if he keeps up with past performances.

Best Supporting Actress:
Penelope Cruz will walk away with the honor, but Viola Davis was able to make the most significant impression on me out of all the films I saw with her twelve minutes on the screen. She will be a force to reckon with in the future.

Best Animated Film:
If Wall-E does not win this, Academy members take cover. Its one thing not to nominate it for Best Picture, but if this does not win against Bolt and Kung Fu Panda, bad things will happen.

For the other categories, I am pretty much on par for the assumed winners. I am curious (look at me go) about “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” possibly losing all thirteen awards they were nominated for.

Tomorrow, IFC will be presenting their annual Spirit Awards, which reward smaller films, with smaller budgets and actors who command smaller salaries. Last year’s winners were pretty identical to a lot of Oscar winners, but I don’t think that will be the case this year. Steve Coogan will be the host this go around for the zany little brother to the Oscars, so it should be a funny one. I will be Twittering during those, so check it out.

So to wrap up, I will be watching the Oscars, hosted by Sexiest Man of the Year Hugh Jackman. Its not a bad idea to have an attractive singing and dancing star up there, who has won a TONY and an Emmy for hosting the Tonys. These are not bad credentials and will definitely pull in the 35 – 55 year old female market they desperately need. I know that ratings expectations this year are low and I can only imagine the top level celebs they are bringing in to walk the carpet and hype it up. I will be live blogging the evening, beginning with red carpet and Barbra Walters special coverage. Don’t forget – Sunday, February 22nd at 8PM on ABC – The Oscars.

Who do you think got stiffed? Who do you think will win?

So I think it is perfect that my first real post within the New Year on my new site SPIELSTER.com is about last night’s Golden Globes. I adore the Golden Globes as an award show, because I feel like it’s the only one that allows the audience at home to enjoy the night. Its comfortable, with all the stars sitting together at tables that could resemble what I imagine a banquet hall on a Norwegian Cruise line would look like and them drinking the bubbly all night and mingling. It also celebrates the majors in each category within film and TV, so its much easier to pay attention too without all that awarding cinematic excellence for the lighting of trolls or something that the Oscars does.

Last night was not boring, with the parade of bad dresses, just fucked hairdos on leading ladies and drunken British comedians.Kate Winslet, who is usually a bridesmaid, never a bride, brought home TWO Golden Globes, for her performances in The Reader and Revolutionary Road. During her second acceptance speech, where she officially lost the calm and cool awards, she was thanking her fellow nominees and totally blanked on Angelina Jolie, which was priceless and enough of a speech for my bitter ass.And while this is epic, with her getting a double win in the dramatic categories and throwing a real wrench in Oscars predictions, it must be insanely upsetting to Anne Hathaway, who was prematurely named the winner on the Golden Globes site on Friday, which all of the interwebs picked up on, forcing many to change their cubical betting systems and adding Anne as the winner in the Dramatic Lead Actress category. Thankfully, NBC didn’t go in for a close up after Winslet’s name was announced. Other big winners last night were Slumdog Millionaire, a wonderful movie filmed in Mumbai, based on the story of three resilient children and their battle with destiny. The movie won best screenplay, best director and best movie, along with a win for score. More after the jump….

Expectedly and deserved, Heath Ledger won for supporting actor within a drama. Christopher Nolan, the director of The Dark Knight, accepted the award after showing a clip of his work. As you all know, my adoration for Ledger’s abilities knows no bounds and this year, the Oscars will be a sad place when thinking about the possibilities of that man’s career. In a wonderful surprise, Mickey Rourke took home the Best Actor in a drama prize for his portrayal of a loser wrestler in “The Wrestler” and acknowledged his redemption story with warmth that is not always seen from these actors. He was thankful for everyone who worked hard to get him back ni the game and was appreciative that they did not give up on him. His speech also provoked the director on the film Darren Aronfsky to give Rourke the finger, in a playful manner, which was picked up by NBC. Wall-E, my favorite movie of 2008, finally won something…although it was just for Animated Film. And lastly, Steven Spielberg, of whom this site was NOT named after, was given the Cecil B. DeMille award. The director and producer’s nearly 40 years in the business are not only legendary but amazing with the amount of change and growth he has brought to the film making process. Without this man, who knows if we would even know what a blockbuster was? His acceptance speech was not only beautifully eloquent, but it was such a wonderful celebration of the art that he has been a part of and the industry he has worked within for a years. His retelling of his first movie theater going experience was similar to that of mine and I remember the excitement that I felt when I first entered a movie theater and to be honest when the crowd is usually quiet, I still get that feeling. It was just wonderful to see someone so advanced within his career and so highly regarded within the industry discuss apprenticeships and the art form itself and not gloat about himself. It was also a bit mind blowing to see some of his actors in the audience who have aged nearly 20 – 30 years since their time on screen.

All in all, other than the parade of weird ruffly beige dresses one half of the chicks wore last night, I would say this year’s globes were a wonderful hit. Here’s a full list of the winners, courtesy of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. Click here for winners!
