McClanahan is best known for her fabulous portrayal of Blanche Devereaux on “The Golden Girls“, the sexy man-crazy roomie who taught us all how to be both classy AND sassy. According to her manager Babara Lawrence, Rue was surrounded with family at the time of her death. Which is comforting news as the actress has been battling health issues for years. McClanahan, who had survived breast cancer in the late 1990′s, suffered a minor stroke earlier this year after heart bypass surgery and had a very difficult time recovering from the health setback.

More than being a “Golden Girl”, McClanahan starred in “Maude“, alongside fellow “Girl” Bea Arthur, “Mama’s Family” and mos recently “Sordid Lives: The Series“. Rue also made her mark on both Broadway and the big screen, and received an Emmy and an Obie in appreciation for her work over the years. Rue fostered relationships throughout her tenure on the screen and stage and her colleagues, including Betty White, have already released statements of sadness and shock over her passing. She was an avid supporter of animal rights, being one of the first celebrities to support PETA and championed gay rights throughout her career. McClanahan left her mark all over entertainment and will be greatly missed. There is just a few images more vivid from my childhood then watching “The Golden Girls” with my Grandma. The show sparked a revolution in TV, allowing women to discuss once taboo topics like sex, racism and aging, with a frank humor rarely seen. And it would not have been the same without Rue. So thank you Rue for being a friend to me and millions of others. Hopefully you are eating a slice of cheesecake with Bea and Estelle somewhere.

Rue McClanahan is survived by her sixth husband, Morrow Wilson and her son, Mark Bish. Let’s remember Rue doing what she did best – making us laugh. Here’s a best of Blanche video and I will try to find more goodies from her long career later today.

Seriously, Hollywood why are you trying to remake all of Goldie Hawn’s classic movies? Last week, it was announced that J.Lo will <del datetime="2010-03-31T15:42:41+00:00">stink up</del> star in an updated version of the 1980′s classic Overboard. And now it seems that wasn’t enough, as today it was announced that NewLine/Warner Bros. are set to remake of Private Benjamin, with Anna Faris to star. Yes, the assault on my lovely childhood continues, but at least this time the casting is perfect. While normally I would threaten an all out attack on Hollywood for the audacity to even attempt to remake such a classic, my love of all things Faris is calming my anger and peaking my interest in a remake.
The original starred Goldie Hawn, for which she received an Best Actress Oscar nomination, as a naive and spoiled woman who enlists in the Army after her husband’s sudden death on the wedding night. It’s a classic fish out of water story, but with a feminist update, with Hawn prevailing at the end. The film skyrocketed Hawn into A-List territory and made waves for the women’s movement. It also scored two other Oscar nods, one for supporting actress Eileen Brennan (who will be nearly impossible to replace) and original screenplay.

Amy Talkington, who also penned the updated version of my favorite movie,Valley Girl is writing the screenplay and Mark Gordon producing. The latest version will definitely discuss the recent wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and acknowledge the importance of women within our military, but not poke fun at the men and women serving.

As I’ve said before, I’m not crazy about remakes, especially when I know there are still oodles of stories to be told. But if this is the vehicle Faris needs to make to put her into the spotlight, then I am behind it. Faris is a rare comedienne, one who is more expressive with facial gestures than anything that could ever be uttered out of her mouth. And while she has had some starring roles, like The House Bunny, nothing has come out and propelled her to the next level, which she so deserves to be. And this disservice is part of the real issue within Hollywood nowadays. Why is someone as talented as Faris not working 4 -5 times a year and turning down quality screenplays left and right? Why is Hollywood not creating star vehicles for such a talent? Where’s her Apatow? Personally, I have a screenplay I have been working on for Faris, so if by the off chance anyone even remotely affiliated with her reads this – CALL ME!(No really, call me!) But, seriously Anna Faris should be a household name, on the covers and in the theaters. Why is it taking Hollywood so long to get this? Hopefully, this does the trick.

Ugh! Why is Hollywood continuously trying to kill my childhood? One of the most perfect comedies, Overboard, which is like crack when you tune into on a Saturday afternoon, is in the works to be remade!!! And with Jennifer Lopez in the starring role!

In the original, Goldie Hawn flawlessly plays socialite Joanna Stayton, who falls overboard from her yacht outside a Podunk town, develops amnesia and is left at a hillbilly hospital by her husband Grant. Dean Proctor (Kurt Russell) a local contractor originally hired to revamp Stayton’s closet on the yacht and who is not compensated for his work, sees Joanna on the TV and decides to seek revenge on the rich chick and convince her she is wife and mother of his four unruly kids. Hilarity ensues, everyone learns a lesson, Dean builds a mini-golf course and an adorable kid goes “Bah bah bah bah”.

Its quite near perfect, but Jenny from the Block and Will Smith think they should go twinkering around with classic comedies, so here we are. And no worries, Smith won’t be building any closets (ha ha) in the flick since he will be producing the film with his partner at Overbrook, James Lassiter. Adam Cooper, Bill Collage and Leslie Dixon wrote the current script, but no word yet if it sticks close to the original. Not sure how you will pull this kind of thing off with all of today’s technology and Im hoping this has nothing to do with the Bronx, but you never know. Check out the original trailer below and avoid this remake with every being in your body.

Actor and one time teen idol Corey Haim has passed away at age 38 from an apparent overdose. The man who met fame, fortune and sadly, his demons in the 1980′s with his partner in madness Corey Feldman, was pronounced dead at his Los Angeles home this morning by LAPD. The actor had recently been suffering from flu-like symptoms and passed out in front of his mother at around 2:30AM, and was pronounced dead at a Burbank hospital a half an hour later.

While Haim had fallen on hard times the past few years, even at one point selling teeth and hair to cover his debts courtesy of addiction, he will be best remembered as the free spirit and adorable teen idol he once was. His career blossomed overnight and his starring roles in films like Lucas and The Lost Boys confirmed that not only was he a heartthrob, but he had the chops to succeed in this business. He partnered with Corey Feldman, the duo was dubbed “The Coreys” by the 80′s media, for seven films, including Lost Boys, License to Drive and my personal favorite,Dream a Little Dream (which I purchased from a local video rental place for $20). “The Coreys” were synonymous with partying, young Hollywood, box office success and 80′s excess. Haim found himself at the end of the decade with a crazy drug habit, fledgling career and an even sadder private life. Haim all but disappeared in the early 90′s with flop after flop at box office and addictions eating away at him.
After a drug induced stroke, Haim found himself on the road to recovery in 2004 and returned in 2007 to the spotlight with his reality show “The Two Coreys“, which followed Feldman and Haim for their quest to move back on top of the Hollywood food chain. The show lasted two seasons and brought the best friends back together and as Defamer ridiculed to the point of not on the reality program, back and ready to work. Haim saw little lift to his career from the program and recently just wrapped up production the thriller, American Sunset. Today, Haim passed away, ending a possible career resurrection and the possibility of a happy ending.

As a child, there were few things better than Corey Haim. His looks, charm and humor were the essential pre-teen package and I would have followed him to the ends of the earth. While someone dying THIS young is tragic and sad, what is really sad about the whole thing is that its not surprising. Haim was a casualty of Hollywood, and by that I mean a child star who was used up until he couldn’t give anymore, and then medicated to hide the pain. Its common practice in Hollywood, but sometimes there are those folks that actually deserve to continue to work, who have a gift and should be respected. Unfortunately, Haim had to battle various demons while attempting to take back his career, and his childhood was riddled with divorce, abuse and overt exposure to adult themes.

The glimmer and hope that was once his signature fell away as time went on and sadly, its not an easy thing to get back. As the similar child star story continues to play out, the pain of being unloved as an adult is sometimes too much for them to handle. And Haim is just another story to add to the growing pile of stars who taken their own lives, consciously or accidentally. Haim is the reason I actually added a category Sadness to my blog, because you could see that deep down all the guy wanted to do was act and entertain the masses. He was not happy with addiction and was even more depressed by his lack of ability to truly kick what ended up taking his life. Hopefully, we can learn the proper way to treat people in this business, avoid tearing them down and learn that medicating does not always “fix” the problem. But I can only assume that this will not be the last sad story I need to recap on this blog. Little boy lost, Corey Haim will be greatly missed and I would like to personally thank him for bringing hours of entertainment to my life. Aloha Corey. And hopefully you can now truly rest.

Let’s remember him this way, shall we?

If you are reading this, chances are you watched at least one episode of the American 80′s treasure “Small Wonder”, a low budget syndicated sitcom based around the Lawsons and the odd little robot girl, V.I.C.I. who lives with the family and is treated like an actual child. Only in the 80′s folks, only in the 80′s. The show has just been released on DVD (out on February 16th) and culture vulture Rich from FourFour took one for the team and watched all NINE hours of the program!!! And after all of that he figured out the most important thing you might have missed on a show about a robot girl when you were watching it at age 8 – the show is sooo gay. To prove this amazing theory, Rich compiled a must see video, even for the folks who have no idea what I am talking about.

So sit back and enjoy the genius that was ‘Small Wonder’.

How could a love this true not last? Susannah Feldman, wife of once upon a time teen heartthrob Corey Feldman, has filed for divorce. The two, who met at a nightclub, were married for seven years and have a five year-old son Zen. Corey married the mega fan on their first stint on reality TV, with a ceremony performed by MC Hammer on Vh1′s ‘The Surreal Life‘. Never ones to shy away from the camera, the two, along with Feldman’s former partner in crime and other half of the Coreys, shot two seasons of “The Two Coreys”. The reality show followed the lives of the two Coreys after Hollywood didn’t want to hear from them anymore, and Susannah’s attempt to become a star herself. All in all it was a sad mess, but it did seem that Corey and Susie were in it for the long haul from the crappy show. I guess seven years in Hollywood is like a silver wedding anniversary for the rest of America.

Feldman has yet to make a statement about Susie’s request for divorce and sole custody of their son, but something tells me ‘The Insider’ will be giving Gosselin the ol ‘heave ho for this true celebrity to start yammering on about his divorce. As long as Feldman stays away from Michael Lohan, we are good. OMG guys, how about Lohan and Feldman? Is that not the best child star/hot mess match up you have heard?????? Anyways, in the meantime ladies, grab a glove, put on an MJ album and get ready to get some of this….

Back in the day, there was nothing hotter than Nicole Eggert. I had such a girl crush on her when I was watching “Charles in Charge” (which reminds me of the adorable Jennifer Runyon) and somehow, her hot actress status didn’t really pay off for a career with longevity. She made the same mistake so many other actresses have and got breast implants. She also had the quintessential late 80′s actress live, which meant hanging out with Scott Baio, dating Corey Haim and eventually landed herself a gig as a lifeguard on “Baywatch”. Surprisingly, she hasn’t been heard from much since. Eggert lost the implants awhile ago, but recently started putting on the pounds, or what is commonly known to the rest of the world as becoming normal sized. Since Eggert still counts as a celebrity, mainly thanks to millions of once upon a time teenage boys, VH1 reached out to her and she agreed to join the cast of their latest installment of “Celebrity Fit Club”. And apparently, Eggert has no issue poking fun at herself or the insane idea that a woman who is a size 10 would be considered fat. She teamed up with FunnyorDie team to see what would be response to her in her bikini on the beach nowadays.

Nicole Eggert is BACK IN BAYWATCH! from Nicole Eggert

I really appreciate a chick who has a good humor regarding her image, especially an actress who was forced to base a lot of her career on her looks. Unfortunately, not everyone gets the joke in the video, but if you can’t find it, its useless to break it down for you. The new installment of “Celebrity Fit Club” looks like it could be the best yet, with Bobby Brown, Sebastian Bach, Kevin Federline, Project Runway’s Jay McCarrol and Bad Girl’s Club favorite Tanisha, joining Eggert in the pursuit to loose the pounds. I can not wait for the shit to hit the fan in February, when the season premieres on Vh1.
